to stay and Vernal’s parents welcomed him into
their home. At the time, Maurice was preaching
at Little Union Baptist Church where the Chafins
were members. Maurice also owned a store in
Old Unionville that Vernal ran for about a year.
It was in the back of that store in which Maurice
opened a small Post Office. The Unionville Post
Office still operates in that building today.

Speeding Nuns?
A cop pulled over a car and approached the driver, a nun.
"Why were you only driving 23 miles per hour on the Highway?" He asked.
"Well, the sign said 23 miles per hour," she replied.
"No, that sign said Highway 23. That's not the speed limit," he said. Then, looking at the other nuns in
the car, he asked, "Why do they look so shaken up?"

"We just exited Interstate 196," she answered.

The Gates Of Hell
by Pastor Jon Miller

In the scripture Matthew records the words of the Lord when he said, "I will build my church, and the
gates of hell shall not prevail against it." (Matthew 16:18) This is a verse in which we as believers can
find great comfort, encouragement and even hope. It is because of misinterpretation of this scripture in
sermons and writings that cause some to miss the great news that Jesus is giving in this one statement.

If you are like me, I am sure that you have heard this verse used to preach about how Satan is
attacking the Lord's Church. Don't get me wrong, I do believe that the church is in a constant spiritual
battle, but that's not the message found here in Matthew. The one thing that always bothered me in
using this verse in relation to the spiritual battle is the mention of the word "gates." There is no general in
his right mind when going into a fierce battle who would ask his superior for gates to use in the fight.
Swords, not gates are used to fight battles. In Bible times one of the most important means of protecting
a city from attack was to build a wall around the city. In the wall there would be at least one gate. Its
purpose was to protect the city, to keep the people in and the enemy out.

The Greek word that Jesus used in Matthew 16:18 which is translated "hell" is the word "Hades" which
refers to death or the grave. This is where the hope and encouragement comes from in this passage.
Jesus was talking to Peter about His church being built upon the profession that He is the Christ. When
you and I come to believe that truth and turn to Him in faith, we go from being dead to being alive in the
body of Christ. Because of the cross, the gates of death are not able to prevail in holding us back. The
gates are not strong enough to keep us when they are bombarded with the blood of Christ. The Apostle
Paul said, "In Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive." (1 Cor 15:22)

Even in a more literal sense there is coming a day that we call the "rapture" when the trumpet of the
Lord sounds and the dead in Christ will rise to meet the Lord in the air. (1 Thess 4:16-17) The gates of
death have no power over the Christian. That is the victory that was won for us by Jesus on the cross.
When Jesus introduced Himself in the book of Revelation, he said, "I am he that liveth, and was dead;
and, behold, I am life for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death."

There is no greater hope for believers in Christ than to know that we have more life ahead of us than
we have behind us. We will live for all of eternity because as Jesus said, "The gates of hell shall not
prevail against the church." The grave will now be able to hold us back when the trumpet call of the
Lord comes. Because of this truth when we face death we can cry out like Paul did, "O death where is
your sting? O grave where is your victory? (1 Cor 15:55) It is my
prayer that you find comfort in Jesus' message found here in the gospel of Matthew and that you are
able to comfort one another with the words of our Lord. (1 Thess 4:18)

The Carpenter
Once upon a time two brothers who lived on adjoining farms fell into conflict. It was the first serious rift
in 40 years of farming side by side, sharing machinery, and trading labor and goods as needed without a
hitch.
Then the long collaboration fell apart. It began with a small misunderstanding and it grew into a major
difference, and finally it exploded into an exchange of bitter words followed by weeks of silence.
One morning there was a knock on John's door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter's toolbox.
"I'm looking for a few days work" he said.
"Perhaps you would have a few small jobs here and there. Could I help you?"
"Yes," said the older brother. "I do have a job for you. Look across the creek at that farm. That's my
neighbor, in fact, it's my younger brother. Last week there was a meadow between us and he took his
bulldozer to the river levee and now there is a creek between us. Well, he may have done this to spite
me, but I'll go him one better. See that pile of lumber curing by the barn? I want you to build me a fence
- an 8-foot fence - so I won't need to see his place anymore. Cool him down, anyhow."
The carpenter said, "I think I understand the situation. Show me the nails and the post-hole digger and
I'll be able to do a job that pleases you."
The older brother had to go to town for supplies, so he helped the carpenter get the materials ready and
then he was off for the day.
The carpenter worked hard all that day measuring, sawing, nailing.
About sunset when the farmer returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. The farmer's eyes
opened wide, his jaw dropped.
There was no fence there at all. It was a bridge... a bridge stretching from one side of the creek to the
other! A fine piece of work handrails and all - and the neighbor, his younger brother, was coming
across, his hand outstretched.
"You are quite a fellow to build this bridge after all I've said and done."
The two brothers stood at each end of the bridge, and then they met in the middle, taking each other's
hand. They turned to see the carpenter hoist his toolbox on his shoulder. "No, wait! Stay a few days.
I've a lot of other projects for you," said the older brother.
"I'd love to stay on," the carpenter said, "but, I have many more bridges to build."
