Preparation of filling with Glass Ionomer
Restorative Materials

Objectives

1. To get knowledge of Glass Ionomer

Cement filling material and instruments
2. Able to understand preparation of filling
Procedure.
3. Able to know the classification of cavity.

Outline

1. To recognize the procedure of filling

preparation.
2. To recognizes restorative instruments and
materials.
3. Able to fill class I or II cavity of the teeth
with any GIC filling materials.
4. Should get knowledge, the that GIC
materials are self cure and light cure.

2
Introduction
Preparing the Class I filling with GIC (Ketac
Molar) restorative materials in molar teeth
with class I cavity. This material is a widely
used restorative technique with goal to protect,
heal and preserve the tooth structure. The
ability and benefit of this Glass Ionomer is as
follow.
 Excellent conservation of tooth structure
 Chemical adhesion of dentine and enamel
 Kemineralization through floride release
 Anti-cariogenic properties.

Materials and Method

1. Materials

The use of material and instruments.

1. Molar teeth with occlusal caries.

2. Spatula and plastic instrument
3. Air-water syringe
4. Slow Speed Hand Pieces
3
5. High Speed Hand Pieces
6. Articulating paper /Blue paper
7. Light Cure Set
8. Ketac Molar (GIC) Materials.

Figure.1 Molar teeth with caries

Caries are removed using diamond small

round bur with high speed hand pieces and
prepare the cavity using high speed hand
pieces and diamond bigger round burs. This
cavity is Class I and on the occlusal surface of
molar tooth and it can be initiate as (o).

2. Plastic instruments are filling instruments

especially composite, zinc oxide dressing and
glass ionomer cement, and etc. Spatula to mix
the GIC materials .These spatulas (fig-3) also
4
useful for mixing all dental material except
alginate and gypsun products.

3. This Air-water syringe provides air, water

or a combination spray of air and water. The
tip of the syringe is removable and made of
either disposable plastic or autoclavable metal.

4. Low-speed contra-angle hand pieces and

burs.
Low speed hand pieces are available as
contra-angle hand piece, and straight hand
pieces. In this study only use contra-angle
hand pieces to polish and adjust the filling.

5. High speed hand piece use for remove the

caries from the tooth with diamond small
round bur (Figure-6) .The caries also can
removed with various type of excavator. Access
the cavity with bigger diamond bur. After
preparation of cavity, the cavity should dry
with air-water syringe (Figure-4).

6. Articulating /Blue paper.

This articulathing paper (Fig-7) also
known as blue paper. Articulathing
paper used for to get bite registration
after filling / restorating and after fit
the prosthetic and protodontic.

Figure-8, Light Cure Set

9
The Light cure set is use for restourative
materials which need to cure. Most GIC
materials are self cure materials. All composite
materials need light cure.

8. Ionomer Cement (Ketac Molar)

Restorative Materials.

This GIC is allow 5 minutes from start of mix

before finishing. Handling time from start of
mix 3 minutes. Setting time from start of mix 5
minutes. This Ketac Glaze requires 10 seconds
light cure (Fig-8). The characteristics of ketac
molar are as follow.
 Amalgam-likk packability
 Comsistency that’s less sticky than
competitive materials
 Convenient work time (3 minutes) and set
time (5 minutes).
 Wear rate of ketac was substantially less
than that of Fuji IX.

2. Method
Technique of filling procedure.
1. At first remove the caries using high
speed handpieces with diamond round bur
(Fig-10), and rinse with air and water syringe
and blot dry (Fig-13).

5. Mixing ½ of powder with liquid using

spatula see figure-14. Mixing time is 3 minutes.

5. Complete the mixing within 3 minutes and

ready to place into the cavity (fig-15).
