I am grateful to the British Council Kathmandu, Nepal and Karachi, Pakistan for facilitating
ELTeCS project entitled "Exploiting Authentic Materials in EFL Classrooms: Teachers
Training". This project helped the ELT professionals of Nepal and Pakistan to train themselves
on how to exploit authentic materials in their classrooms. It trained two hundred teachers from
different higher secondary schools of both the countries. I deeply appreciate the support of
ELTeCS in granting the ELTeCS /Hornby Award for the ELTeCS South Asia Project. I am
grateful to Ms Penny Trigg, for her persistent help. I acknowledge the relentless and generous
support of Richard Cox ,British Council Nepal, who provided me a great opportunity to attend
Hornby Summer School 2005, in Karachi, Pakistan. The Summer School in Karachi was a great
success and it helped me to breed this project. He also very kindly and generously provided me
newspapers and valuable information from the British Council, Kathmandu. Without his
cooperation this project would not have been a success. I also extend my heartfelt thanks to Sati
Saima, ELT director of British Council Karachi, Pakistan and Zakia Serwer, director of Hornby
Summer School 2005, Pakistan for providing me a homely atmosphere to stay in Pakistan during
the Summer School. I take this opportunity to acknowledge the precious guidance of our
respected teacher Mr. Tamas Kiss, Hungary, at the Summer School. I am also grateful to the
experts from Nepal and Pakistan for their support and cooperation to make this project a success.
I thank Chitwan Science College, for the support and the facility provided to execute the project.
My thanks and appreciations also go to my colleague, Athar Munir Siddique, country manager

Report Of ELTeCS Project
The project basically focused on to train ELT teachers on how to link the class with modern
communicative skills. To facilitate the process of communication in the classroom, the use of
authentic materials by teachers was accepted as very useful. Mostly the newspapers and
magazines were used as the main source for authentic materials during the training as they
contain fresh communicative language.
In Nepal, we used newspapers that were published in English speaking country, like the
Guardian, The Weekly Guardian, and The Times. The newspapers published in Nepal were also
used; e.g. The Kathmandu Post, The Rising Nepal, etc. Besides the newspapers, we also used
the magazines like Himal and Nepal. The training has made good impact on trainees. Learners
and trainers got benefit from the training.
WE believe that Newspaper's language is suitable for the intermediate level. We chose
newspapers because they were readily available even in the hinterlands of Nepal and Pakistan.
Our rural people are going to get more access to the newspapers. Moreover, they can provide
fresh materials on various topics. There was a clear focus in the program on developing
participants' training skills.
Recommendation
Based on our experience and the feedback received from the trainees, we came to the
conclusion that the training is very useful for teachers of developing countries. By the same
token, the project is useful for developing innovative ideas, language teaching skills and
proficiency of the ELT teachers of Nepal and Pakistan.
Procedures
The training was carried out involving three different activities. Each activity was carried out
for two days. Each day, there were three sessions. In the first activity, the members of the core
team along with some others got training from experts on the subject matter. During the
training, the trainees learned how to prepare a lesson plan using authentic materials to achieve
the course objectives.
Second activity was carried out for two consecutive days having 3 sessions each day. The
second phase of the project was conducted by the members of the core team. It was done in two
different districts in Nepal and Pakistan.
The third phase of the project was divided into two groups where 54 teachers from different
higher secondary schools of two different districts participated. The master trainer acquired the
skills to transfer their gained knowledge to others .In the third stage we encouraged the trained
teachers to share the knowledge with the other teachers in their respective institutions.
Each activity began with briefing of ELTeCS, Hornby trust and some of the activities of the
British Council. The training focused on what is authentic material and how we can use these
materials for our students at the intermediate level. The trainees got trained on how to use fresh
materials like TV schedule, obituaries, weather forecasts, business news, etc. The trainees were
provided with refreshment and remuneration.
Magazines provide fresh materials on various topics. It has new communicative language. So
the trainees learned how to adopt different skills. This project provided training to 100 teachers
on innovative way of teaching the learners. They learned how to develop a package or lesson
plan for their learners to make their class communicative. They were motivated to use these
methods by relating to their course. We also provided them with theoretical knowledge,
guidelines and handouts to implement their training in future. They realized that the commonly
available materials could be used in creative ways while teaching modern language for
communication to students. This process fills up the gap which is not fulfilled by outdated
textbooks. The trainees got trained on how to prepare their learners for real life communication.
It was realized that the project developed in trainees not only the efficiency in classroom
delivery but also proficiency in the language.
Outcomes of the project
The ELTeCS project "Exploiting Authentic Material in English Language Classroom" has
been successful in making our teachers feel that use of authentic materials is a very useful way
of using communicative approach in the classroom while teaching English.
Feedbacks
We have a complete record of all the teachers trained under this project. Even after the
project is formally over, the trainees have made commitment to share their acquired knowledge
and experience among their colleagues in their respective institutions. The group leaders from
both the countries will take responsibility for the dissemination of what has been learnt. Hence,
in a way, it will be a continuous process.
Summary
The ELTeCS project formally ended. The partners of the project were Nepal and Pakistan.
The project was divided into three phases. In 1st phase core team members got training from the
