Q: We’re building a new home and plan on living there for a lifetime.
How can we design our home so that it will be comfortable for us
now as well as through retirement?
Posted by: M.P. Ollman, Franksville, WI
A: Answer: Yes, there is a strong movement in home building called Universal Design,
or Aging-in-Place. This practice can help us maintain our independence through
the retirement years.
Many of the features listed above are easily achieved during the building process. From 2000 to 2030

A Foundation Built
on Customer Service
Where do you begin when selecting a builder?
It was that question that prompted John & Jamie Jewell to start Jewell Homes.
With experience in both the real estate and remodeling industry, John and Jamie expected
choosing a builder to be easy when they started the process of building their own home.
What they found once they made their choice was an eye opener. Before their job was even
underway, they experienced what many customers face – lack of communication. With phone
calls not being returned, they decided to build it themselves – and Jewell Homes was born.
It's that past experience that brings a strong set of principles into the Jewell Homes building
philosophy. First and foremost, customer service is #1. At Jewell Homes, there's no question
you can't ask, customers are always listened to, phone calls are always returned promptly,
and most of all – you’ll be working directly with John and Jamie Jewell.
!After all, isn't that how building a new home should be?
The Franklynn –
Bringing It All Together
Jewell Homes invites you to come out to their Franklynn
model and see what a difference a Jewell home makes. This
2200 square foot ranch is a great example of the kind of family
friendly home design Jewell is known for. The open concept is
perfect for entertaining, with a gracious foyer that flows into the
open great room with tray ceiling and corner fireplace. The great room
also opens to a chef's kitchen with beautiful hardwood floors, granite
countertops and a center island. The great room and kitchen in The Franklynn
showcase just some of the custom touches that Jewell features standard in
their homes. The split bedroom layout also offers a mudroom with built-in 2,250 sq. ft. Open Concept Floorplan
lockers, tiled bathrooms and a terrific home office. The master suite with walk-in Base Price: $259,900
closet and master bath with corner whirlpool tub complete this home. (plus lot & site improvements)
And when it comes to energy efficiency Jewell leads the way, with every home certified and documented Wisconsin ENERGY
STAR® efficient. This means checking insulation quality, air leakage, fan flow rates, furnace and air performance, and window
performance. In a time where many builders are cutting costs by cutting down on these inspections, Jewell wants their customers
to know that these details are just as important as the look of the home.
So what does that mean in the long run? Jewell homes consistently test 3 times
better than Wisconsin standards, which means dollars saved on energy bills.

Spotlight
Why obtaining multiple bids on your
remodeling project doesn't add up!
Are you thinking about remodeling your home and you have been told to obtain
multiple bids? Before you embark on the path of getting multiple bids remember that an
addition to your home, a kitchen remodel, a bathroom remodel or a whole house remodel is
more than just a number. It is something you are going to have to live with and live through.
Your home is your largest investment so you want your remodeling project to be done right,
without a lot of headaches, setbacks or cost overruns.
Ann Rodrigues It is a buyer's market right? Many people believe that the reason they are obtaining bids
Vice President is to give them a way to compare companies, but bids don't really do that. They compare

Goliath Builders, Inc. sacrificed to be the lowest bidder. When comparing the bids it will be your job to figure out
what exactly is being sacrificed.

What could the low bid be missing? More than likely the lowest bidder has sacrificed
design, is using lower quality materials, is using substandard workers or they may have made
a mistake in their bid and forgot to bid everything. Even worse they may have done so
deliberately just to be the lowest bidder on the job. One of tricks to be the lowest bidder is
to put a lot of allowances in the bid. What is an allowance? It is an amount put in the bid to
allow for a certain item. If the material chosen exceeds what the allowance amount is, you
will have to pay the difference.
Creative design verse price. There is no way to compare bids unless you are comparing
the exact same design. Most remodeling companies are design/build based. They come to
your home, meet with you, listen to your wants and needs and then come up with a design
to meet those objectives. More than likely no two designs will be the same. So how in the
world could you compare bids? The lower bid will also be the simplest design. Design tricks
to reduce cost are to draft plans that utilize the least amount of cabinets, windows, countertop
space or materials in general. The most functional and creative spaces will not equal the

lowest price. Design most definitely will be sacrificed in the lowest price!
A company As you can see, shopping your remodeling project on price alone is a big mistake. It is unwise
to pay too much, but it is worse to pay too little. Your house is your largest investment – make

When you pay to little, you could decrease the value of your home. The common law of
business prohibits paying a little and getting a lot – it can't be done! Remember you always
the lowest get what you pay for.
Find a remodeling contractor you can trust and work with, one that is reliable, dependable
price and and stable. Instead of trying to compare bids, do your homework. Look for a company that
is properly licensed, make sure they are members of a professional trade association, check
with the Better Business Bureau, ask to look at their work, ask for a reference list, call their

BENEFITS OF
LAND-LEASING
Take A Fresh Look!
Land-Lease vs. Own
By leasing a home instead of owning the land, you will:
• Reduce your family's housing budget an average of 20%
• Realize a 32% overall savings
• Pay half as much for down-payment
• Pay for 20 years instead of 30
Many experts say leasing land will soon be as common as
leasing a vehicle, which has become a preferred avenue
for many car owners in the United States.
