A recount text tell’s ‘what happened’. The purpose of the text is to document a series of events and evaluate
their significance in some way. It focuses on a sequence of events, all of which relate to the occasion. It also has
expressions of attitude and feelling, usually made by the writer about the events.
The text recount is organized to include:
a. An orientation providing background information needed to understand the text, i .e., who was involved,
where it happened, when it happened
b. A record of events usually recount in a chronological order
c. Personal comments and/or evaluate remarks on the incident
Common grammatical features of a recount include:
a. Use of nouns and pronouns to identify people, animals, or things involved
b. Use of action verb to refer to events
c. Use of past tense to locate events in relation to writer’s time
d. Use of conjuctions and time connectives to sequence the events
e. Use of adverbs and adverbial phrases to indicate place and time
f. Use of adjectives to describe nouns
My Holiday
Generic structure
Last week I went to Mount Bromo. I stayed at my friend’s house in Probolinggo, Orientation
East Java. The house has a big garden with colourful flowers and a small pool.
In the morning, my friend and I saw mount Batok. The scenery was very Sequence of events
beautiful. We rode on horse back. It was scary, but it was fun. Then we went to get a
closer look at the mountain. We took picture of the beautiful scenery there. After that,
we took a rest and had lunch under a big tree. Before we got home, we went to the zoo
at Wonokromo. We went home in the afternoon.
We were very tired. However, I think it was really fun to have a holiday like this. Reorientation
I hope my next holiday will be more interesting.
NARRATIVE TEXT
A narrative text focusses on a pattern of events with a problematic and/or unexpected outcome. The purpose if
the text is to entertain and educate the reader.
Narrative text has three parts:
a. Orientation, it sets the scene and introduces the participants and characters.
b. Complication, it is a series of complications or crisis points which arise in the story.
c. Resolusion, the crisis is resolved, for better or for worse.
