STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Albert Einstein’s intriguing words, “Problems cannot be solved at the same level of
awareness that created them.” formed the corner stone of my aspirations to pursue
graduate studies, because a high level of education enhances a person’s rationality
and consequently his level of awareness. .

At the culmination of high school I developed a profound affinity towards

Mathematics & Physics Because of their logical & analytical nature and wide spread
practical implications to which my graduation certificates hold testimony. I got to
know the concepts of a semiconductor during the final year at school and very the
idea of being able to alter the conductivity of a semiconductor just by varying the
amount of doping and its futuristic applications attracted me, what followed was the
natural course of events I decided to take Electronics & Telecommunications at the
undergraduate level

Ever since Electronics has always been a passion for me. As I delved into the realm
of electronics, my initial fascination turned into one of unquenchable obsession. My
under graduate program had lots to offer in areas such as Control Systems, Digital
Signal Processing, Satellite Communication, VLSI Design & Circuits, Analog
Communication, Micro Processor & Application. Each field in my discipline attracted
me in its own way; but the fields that appealed to me most were courses in
Control Systems which was introduced in the second year of undergraduate study
and then Mechatronics in the subsequent year. Major part of both the courses were
imparted by Prof. M.J. Khurjekar ,a higly experienced member of the faculty and a
pioneer in this field with long term industrial experience , his curiosity and interest in
the field really motivated me to take up Control Systems at the graduate level .I got
to learn a lot in the classes and lab sessions conducted by him. The first session in
the labs was devoted to developing simple programs for a Simatic PLC. A
combination of AND, OR blocks generating a complete control circuit for a motor
fascinated me. During the subsequent classes I became familiar with concepts
Ladder diagrams,Actautors,CNC which only affirmed my decision to take up Control
Systems at the graduate level .

The field of control system has a widespread presence in heavy industries from a
design of a simple coffee vending machine to a state of the art PC controlled
robotic arm and i believe there are still other avenues like using automated bots to
streamline the production in the workshops, work in hazardous environments, areas
like an automobile manufacturing unit which require a high degree of precision and
high production values could explored, which is exactly why i would like to pursue
my graduate level study in control systems at ______. I want to hone my skills as a
professional of the industry while at the same time contribute my bit in the research
in this field
To make myself thorough with the very basics of the field i am presently undertaking
a certificate course in PLC Programming. The course entails the fundamentals of
Allen Bradley & Siemens PLC, SCADA, Human Machine Interface & Distributed
Control Systems

Besides core electronics i also got to learn the concepts of Optical & Microwave
communications in a course on the same and then even got to implement some of
them during my summer internship at LAMBDA MICROWAVE SYSTEMS located
at New Delhi, which primarily deals with the designing and installation of antennas
for microwave application ,in all it was an exhaustive experience, being a first in the
corporate world. During the time of my internship the company had decided to
venture into the areas of developing wireless transreceivers so I was assigned a
project in the R&D unit of the company where in I worked on the designing of a
wireless FM transmitter receiver system,it was a challenging task as it required
detailed knowledge of the concepts of selectivity, sensitivity, fidelity & gain of the
receiver besides also learnt about the fabrication techniques of the PCBs for the
communication circuits, the various design aspects.

My final year project work was entitled “A DSP based Deaf Alarm System for people
with hearing imparity” although it was not related to Control Systems it required an
extensive knowledge of the concepts of Signal Processing. The aim was to fabricate an
integrated alarm system which would alert the people with this imparity to various
sound related events like a fire alarm ,door bell when they are all by themselves at
home.

The system basically consists of a DSP processor, a microphone unit which takes input
from various audible sound sources like door bell etc and passes it on to the processor
(TMS320c5416) which was programmed to distinguish between the signals on the
basis of their FFTs and PSD ,once deciphered the detected signal was transmitted to a
mobile body worn receiver via a transmitter module .

The processor was interfaced with the mic to accept the real time signals . We used
Code Composer Studio to dump the code in the processor but to guard the alarm
system against false triggering in the presence of AWGN was a real challenge ,so we
carefully found out the peak frequencies of each input and then logically coupled them
with guard bands. In due course of completion of the project the difficulties faced by me
and group members taught us valuable lessons perseverance and out of the box
thinking . The project has a lot of scope for the future with a litle more effort these
alarms could come in as handy and cheaper alternatives to the hearing aids.

I have always been actively involved in co curricular and extra curricular activities.I
have represented my college cricket team at various intra & inter university
tournaments. I have been an active member of the organizing committee for the annual
college technical meet and social gathering.
I browsed extensively through your web pages and discovered that your research
areas seemed to match in the most coherent way with my areas of specialization, viz,
Control Systems & allied courses in automation. I feel that under your able guidance
and tutelage, I would realize my long cherished dreams and ambitions.

I have performed considerably well academically till now.I graduated both high school
& undergraduate degree with good grades but I still believe there is room for
improvement and I would like to assure you that if given an opportunity to be a part of
the prestigious _____________ I am prepared to work with utmost diligence and
dedication in order to excel in all my areas of work and be a responsible entity of the
university.

I look forward to being a part of your university.
