Task 1 ANGLES AT THE CIRCUMFERENCE I

To investigate angles standing on the same arc.

Action
1. Click on the tab labeled T1 in your workbook.
2. On the EDIT Menu, select PREFERENCES. Click on the UNITS tab. For Distance, select
cm for the Units and tenths for the Precision. For Angle, select degrees for the Units and
tenths for the Precision. Click OK.
3. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select CIRCLE. Click once to set the centre, and click a short
distance away to set the radius and draw the circle.
4. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select POINTER. Click on a blank part of the worksheet. Click
on the circle. On the CONSTRUCT Menu, select POINT ON CIRCLE. On the DISPLAY
Menu, select LABEL POINT, label it A and click OK.
5. Repeat step 4. to create and label a new point B. Click and drag either or both points to
place them in the same semicircle.
6. Repeat step 4. three times to create and label new points P, Q and R. Click and drag
them into the other semicircle to points A and B.
7. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select SEGMENT. Click on the following pairs of points to
join them with a line : A and P, B and P, A and Q, B and Q, A and R, and B and R.
8. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select POINTER. Click on a blank part of the worksheet. Click
on these points in order : A, P and B. On the MEASURE Menu, select ANGLE to measure
angle APB.
9. Repeat step 8. to measure the angle AQB and ARB.

Task 2 CENTRE AND CIRCUMFERENCE ANGLES

To investigate the relationship between the angle at the centre of a circle to the angle at the
circumference, where both angles stand on the same arc.

Action

9. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select POINTER. Click on a blank part of the worksheet. Click
on these points in order : A, P and B. On the MEASURE Menu, select ANGLE to measure
angle APB.
10. Repeat step 9. to measure the angle AOB.

To investigate angles in a semicircle.

Action

5. Click on a blank part of the worksheet. Click on the circle centre. On the DISPLAY
Menu, select LABEL POINT, label it O and click OK.
6. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select LINE. Click on points A and O, and a line will cross the
screen passing through these points.
7. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select POINTER. Click on a blank part of the worksheet. Click
on the circle and the line across the screen. On the CONSTRUCT Menu, select
INTERSECTIONS. Click on a blank part of the worksheet, and then click on the new
intersection point. On the DISPLAY Toolbar, select LABEL INTERSECTION, label it as B
and click OK.
8. Click on a blank part of the worksheet. Click on the line across the screen. On the
DISPLAY Menu, select HIDE LINE.
9. Repeat step 4. twice to create and label new points P and Q. Click and
drag either or both points to place them in the same semicircle.
10. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select SEGMENT. Click on the following pairs of points to
join them with a line : A and B, A and P, B and P, A and Q, B and Q.
11. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select POINTER. Click on a blank part of the worksheet. Click
on these points in order : A, P and B. On the MEASURE Menu, select ANGLE to measure
angle APB.
12. Repeat step 11. to measure the angle AQB.

Menu, select LABEL POINT and label it P. Click and drag point P about 3 cm away from
the circle near vertex A.
9. Click on a blank part of the worksheet. Click on the line across the screen. On the
DISPLAY Menu, select HIDE LINE.
10. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select SEGMENT. Click on the points A and P.
11. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select POINTER. Click on a blank part of the worksheet. Click
on these points in order : B, A and P. On the MEASURE Menu, select ANGLE to measure
angle BAP.

Task 6 ANGLE AT POINT OF CONTACT

To demonstrate that a tangent to a circle is perpendicular to the radius drawn to the point of
contact.

4. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select POINTER. Click on a blank part of the worksheet. Click
on the point at the left-most end of the line. On the DISPLAY Menu, select LABEL
POINT, and label the point P and click OK.
5. Repeat step 4. at the right-most end of the line and label it Q.
6. Click on a blank part of the worksheet. Click on the line PQ. On the CONSTRUCT
Menu, select POINT ON SEGMENT. On the DISPLAY Menu, select LABEL POINT, label
this point T and click OK.
7. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select CIRCLE. Click once anywhere on the worksheet to set
the centre, and then click on point T to set the radius and draw the circle.
8. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select POINTER. Click on a blank part of the worksheet. Click
on the centre of the circle. On the DISPLAY Menu, select LABEL POINT, label it O and
click OK.
9. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select SEGMENT. Click on O and T.
10. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select POINTER. Click on a blank part of the worksheet. Click
on these points in order : O, T and P. On the MEASURE Menu, select ANGLE to measure
angle OTP.
11. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select POINTER. Click on a blank part of the worksheet. Click
on the line PQ and the circle. On the CONSTRUCT Menu, select INTERSECTIONS.
12. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select POINTER. Click and drag any or all of points T, P and
Q until point T and the other point on the circumference of the circle come together to
form ONE point.

Task 7 TANGENTS FROM AN EXTERNAL POINT

To compare two tangents drawn to a circle from an external point.

Useful Tools Pages

POINTER – TOOLBOX Palette


(a) Clicking and dragging a vertex or point moves the object around the screen.
(b) Clicking on a point, line segment or circle selects that object for action by a tool from
one of the menus.

SEGMENT – TOOLBOX Palette


Click and hold the mouse (a point is marked on the screen) and then drag the mouse pointer
a small distance away. Release the mouse, and a straight line will be drawn between the
two points.

CIRCLE – TOOLBOX Palette


Click and hold the mouse on the point designated as the centre and then drag the mouse to
the point designated as the radius. Release the mouse, and a circle will be drawn.

HIDE (OBJECT) – DISPLAY Menu


Click the mouse on the object(s) to be hidden. Select HIDE (OBJECT) and the selected object
will disappear.

LABEL POINT – DISPLAY Menu


Click the mouse on the point to be labelled. Select LABEL POINT. In the window which
appears, type in the required label. (This Tool can also be used to CHANGE the label of a
point.)

POINT ON (OBJECT) – CONSTRUCT Menu


Click the mouse on the object to which you want to add a point. Select POINT ON OBJECT.
The new point can be click and dragged to anywhere on the selected object.

INTERSECTION(S) – CONSTRUCT Menu


Click the mouse on the two objects that you want to mark the intersection point(s) for. Select
INTERSECTION(S), and one (or two) points will now appear at the intersection point(s) of the
objects you selected.

MIDPOINT – CONSTRUCT Menu


Click the mouse on a line segment. Select MIDPOINT, to place a point at the midpoint of the
line.

PERPENDICULAR LINE – CONSTRUCT Menu


Click the mouse on the point through which the line must pass, and then click the mouse on
the line to which the new line is to be perpendicular (90˚). Select PERPENDICULAR LINE.

PARALLEL LINE – CONSTRUCT Menu
Click the mouse on the point through which the line must pass, and then click the mouse on
the line to which the new line is to be parallel. Select PARALLEL LINE.

LENGTH – MEASURE menu


Click the mouse on the segment to be measured. Select LENGTH and the length value will
appear on the screen, together with the segment labels (for example : mAB = 4.35 cm).

ANGLE – MEASURE menu :


Click the mouse on the three points that form the angle to be measured, ensuring that the
angle vertex is the SECOND point selected. Select ANGLE and the angle value will appear
on the screen, together with the angle labels (for example : m∠ABC = 60˚).
