Irrigating Cystoclysis

Objectives:

After 1 hour of classroom discussion, the student nurse will be able to:

1. discuss cystoclysis as to its:

1.1 definition
1.2 purpose
1.3 indications
1.4 contraindications
1.5 complications

2. Enumerate the nursing responsibilities before, during, and after

cystoclysis

3. explain the guidelines in performing cystoclysis

4. demonstrate beginning skills in performing irrigating cystoclysis

Cystoclysis – is a type of irrigation wherein saline solution is introduced

into the bladder.

Purpose:

1. To drain the bladder when acute urinary retention is present.

2. To relieve bladder spasm
3. To prevent formation of calcific deposits in and around the in
dwelling catheter
4. To free blockage in the urinary catheter or tubing.
5. To determine the degree of hemorrhage from the drainage
output.
6. To provide pressure (due to catheter balloon) on the operated
area thus minimizing bleeding.

Indications:

1. urinary retention
2. bladder spasm
3. blood clot inside the catheter
4. pus inside the catheter
5. after prostate or bladder surgery

Contraindications:
1. presence of traumatic injury to the lower urinary tract

Complications:

1. Infection (UTI)
2. Bladder Distention – blockage of an irrigated bladder rapidly
leads to overdistention
3. Bladder rupture

Guidelines:

1. Sterility and patency should be maintained to avoid infection

2. NSS for infusion should be stored and infused at room
temperature to avoid bladder spasms
3. Strict monitoring of intake and output for all patients in CBI
4. Monitor vital signs at least every 4 hours during irrigation;
increase the frequency if the patient becomes unstable.

Nursing Responsibilities:

Before:

1. Check Physician’s order: date, time, room and name.

2. Explain the procedure to the client.
3. Gather the necessary materials.
4. Perform medical handwashing

During:

1. Maintain sterility.
2. Make sure that you’re only exposing the site.

After:

1. Do proper documentation.
2. Measure urine output every hour.
3. Check IVF solution time to time and replaced it once consumed.
