Getting Ready

As you notice, the ideas given are all parts of certain big ideas. For example,
greeting, signature, and heading are parts of a letter. Flyleaf, preface, and glossary are
parts of a book and thorax, abdomen, and antenna are parts of a grasshopper. Other
ideas/groups given are the parts of a module which are- Are You Ready, Self-Test, and
Summary. Lastly, head, trunk, and limbs are parts of a human body.

This module will discuss another important source of information which also has
parts. This reading material that is a good source of information is the newspaper.

3
LESSON
Identifying the Parts of a
1 Newspaper

Have you seen a newspaper? Have you read one?

Reading a newspaper is easy if you know its different parts and what each contains.
It contains news, articles of opinion, features, and advertisements.

What are the parts of a newspaper?

This is the first part of a newspaper. It is called headline. It is written in bold in the
front page of a newspaper. It is the most important news because it contains the most
recent development of the hottest issue.

4
In the given example, what is the most recent and hottest issue? It is about the
recently concluded South East Asian Games (SEAGames) wherein the Philippines
took the overall lead. The headline news is a straight news for it contains facts. The
facts of the news is further detailed in the body of the news.

Sometimes, as a reader you want information with opinion. When the comment
about the news is the opinion of the columnist only, a cut or picture is put on top of his
or her column.

In the example, the opinionated news is about politics. The columnist – Bobit S.
Avila expresses his views about the faces of women in a political crisis. This is not a
news report that expresses the details of the events but it depicts the ideas and opinions
of the columnist towards a certain issue.

5
The second part of a newspaper is called articles of opinion or commentaries and
views. These are articles expressing the views and comments of writers or notable
personalities.

Next part of a newspaper is the local and foreign news. These are news items of
lesser importance.

Below are examples:

This is an example of local news. It is within our country. This is not a major
news report since it involves only a few persons. It doesn’t create a big effect to the
people of the country. The story revolves around the victim who is a private individual
and the suspects.

Example # 2 is an example of a foreign news. Foreign news happens outside the

country. The news above happened in the Vatican. This news has lesser impact and
has lesser importance.

6
Another important part of a newspaper is the editorial. This is the complete news
with analysis and informed argument. It is in this portion that the pros and cons (for
and against) of the issue are given. It has no by-line because it is the whole paper’s
stand on whatever is being editorialized.
To prove its importance and premiere position in the paper, it is on the same page
as the staff box and is allotted a double newspaper column spread.
Sometimes, it is printed in Roman letters, bold, bigger font size.
Get a copy of a newspaper. It you don’t have a copy you may borrow from the
library. Examine its parts, then locate its editorial part. Find out if it is on the same page
as the staff box. Find out too if it occupies two columns on the newspaper.
The article on the editorial page is written by the editor expressing his opinion
about the latest developments or news of national interest. In the example, the latest
news that catches national interest is a crisis. As you read the content of the editorial,
what do you think is the other crisis the editor is referring to? Is it a major concern to
the Filipino people?
What is the editor’s opinion about the issue? To further understand the content,
read again the whole editorial page.

EXAMPLES ARE. WRITE YOUR ANSWER IN YOUR NOTEBOOK.

What information can you get from this part of a newspaper? This is called an
obituary.

In this portion you will find the listing of persons who recently died, or had their
death anniversaries.
The above example is an example of a death anniversary. This part recalls the
date of death of the relative who passed away and where the mass for the dead will be
held.
If it is about the person who recently died, the contents of the obituary are the
name of the relative who passed away and when and where the interment is going to
be.
This portion helps other relatives, friends, and colleagues get informed of the
passing away of the relative especially those who are residing or working in distant
places, those who have been out of communication.

A cactus heaven
in Marinduque

What is the above article about? This part of a newspaper is called a feature story.
What is being featured? It is about the cactus in Marinduque. This special story features
the plant (its variety) and the place where it abundantly thrives.

It is a special story because it treats with great pride the major essence, importance,
and effect of a particular thing, place, or person. In the description given about the

watch TV. What shows are nice to watch tonight? What
is the latest local movie today?

answer their questions?

11

question. She can refer to this to know what movie she will watch and where will she
watch it.

This is an example of a TV guide. It gives you the TV channels, the time slots,
and the title of the program. You will know what channel you can turn to. This portion
answers Fatima’s question. For example, if she wants to watch the television program
Sugo then she will switch the channel to Pinoy Box Office (PBO) at 11:30 A.M. so that
she can watch it from the start.

written about the latest news and developments in sports.
