WEISSES BLATT / HOJA BLANCA examines current art trends in two randomly selected, but representative 
places: how do contemporary artists work in a particular place, how do they express themselves and what 
interests them? Who are these people and what do they want to achieve? Is there is a visible difference in 
the art or not? And is it possible to distinguish between the artists of two such different places?

In order to create a minimal degree of comparability between the works and to encourage the artists to pro­
duce new works, the curators gave all participating artists a blank sheet of paper (30 x 30 cm, 90g/m2). This 
paper had to be used in some way in their work. A white sheet of paper is both a raw material and a universal

The white square is reminiscent of an icon of modernity, evoking the artist’s genius creating masterpieces, 
but conversely also brings about the fear of emptiness and a creative block.

It was important for us as curators to create a mix of emerging and well­known artists, and to include people 
outside the traditional context of art. The works show a wide range of different styles and techniques.
