Introduction

Lesson topic: Oral Presentation


Length of lesson: 90 minutes
Virginia Standards of Learning:
9.2 The student will make planned oral presentations.
9.4 The student will read and analyze a variety of informational materials (manuals, textbooks, business letters, newspapers,
brochures, reports, catalogs) and nonfiction materials, including journals, essays, speeches, biographies, and autobiographies.
9.9 The student will use print, electronic databases, and online resources to access information.

Cognitive Objectives
• Students will identify types of figurative language (including images and sounds), diction, and structuring techniques in
President Barack Obama’s Inaugural Address.
• Students will research a topic for an oral presentation.
• Students will compose an oral presentation.
• Students will demonstrate and improve their oral presentation skills.

Materials and Advanced Preparation


• President Obama’s Inaugural Address
• Smiley Face tricks
• Computers/laptops
• Promethean board (whiteboard, or projector and screen)

Teaching and Learning Sequence


Introduction/Anticipatory Set (15 minutes)
• Students will view youtube video of President Obama’s Inaugural Address.
• Students will respond to teacher directed questions about the speech, e.g. were you moved? How? Explain.

Lesson Development (30 minutes)


• Teacher will introduce figurative language, word choice, and structuring techniques (Smiley Face Tricks).
• Teacher will display text of Obama speech on Promethean board (or using projector and screen, or provide paper copies).
• Students will identify figurative language, etc. in speech.
• Students will respond to teacher directed questions concerning how the figurative language, etc. enhance the overall impact
of the speech.

Closure (45 minutes)


• Students will search online and select a famous figure. Students will prepare a five minute oral presentation about the
figure selected.
• Students must include at least three types of figurative language, word choice, and/or structuring techniques (Smiley Face
Tricks) in their oral presentations.
• Students will give credit in their oral presentations to reference materials used in their presentations.
• Teacher will film students’ oral presentations and post them on blog.

Homework
• Students will critique their speeches per rubric, including volume, stress, pacing, and pronunciation.

Assessment
• Formative –Students will respond to video; identify types of figurative language; identify and analyze author’s use of diction
and structuring techniques; class discussion; research
• Summative—Students will produce and critique oral presentation.
