Kiran 2003 – Computer Events

1. Brain Chewers
Rules for Participation
− Description: Computer Quiz
− Day, Date & Time: Day 1, 5th September 2003, 10.00 am.

− Venue: Computer Lab (Basement).

− Each college may send 1 main team and a maximum of 1 On-The-Spot-Entry (OTSE).

− The rules of the quiz are applicable to the main teams as well as the OTSE teams.

− Each team must have exactly 2 members.

− Under any circumstance, a participant MUST NOT disclose the identity of his/her
college. On doing so, the participant and his teammate i.e. the team (whether main
or OTSE) will be instantly disqualified.

− Prompting of any kind or the use of any unfair means will also lead to instant
disqualification.

General Quiz Rules

− Each team must pass the Elimination Level to qualify for the Final Quiz.

− The Elimination Level will be held between 10.00 am and 10.20 am.

− The result of the Elimination Level will be declared at 11.30 am.

− Based on the result of the Elimination Level, it will be decided whether or not a Tie-
Break Round is necessary.

− If a Tie-Break Round is necessary, it will be held between 11.40 am and 12.00 pm.

− The result of Tie-Break Round will be declared at 12.15 pm, and a 15 minute break will
follow.

− The Final Round of the quiz will begin at 12.30 pm.

Rules for Elimination Level
− Each participant (from each team) is given a paper with a set of 20 multiple-choice
questions, and must answer as many of these as possible within 5 minutes (300 sec).

− Every correct answer is worth 1 point.

− The total points of both participants of a team are added, and the sum total of their points
is calculated as the team’s total points-tally.

− The teams with the top 5 points tallies qualify for the Final Round.

− In case of a Tie-Break, this procedure will be followed:

− a) Qualifier Tie-Break - To decide the top five qualifiers:

 If two or more teams have the same points-tally and their points-tally is among the
top five points-tallies, then a Tie-Break round will be held for them.
 Example: Team A has 18 pts, B has 16 pts, C & D have 15 pts and E & F teams
have 14 pts. Here, A, B, C & D will qualify directly, but E & F will have to go
through the Qualifier Tie-Break Round and only one of the two will qualify as the 5th
team.
 For the Qualifier Tie-Break Round, the tied teams are given a set of 10 multiple
choice questions which they have to answer within 2 minutes & 30 seconds (150
sec).
− b) Ranking Tie-Break - To decide the final rankings of the top five qualifier:

 If among the top five qualifiers, two or more teams have the same points-tally, then
they go through the Ranking Tie-Break round.
 In the example given above, the teams A & B are ranked 1 & 2 respectively. But
though teams C & D have qualified, they have the same points-tall. Thus, to decide
who takes the ranking 3 & 4, C & D have to go though a Ranking Tie-Break Round.
 For the Ranking Tie-Break Round, the tied teams are given a set of 10 multiple
choice questions which they have to answer within 2 minutes & 30 seconds (150
sec).
NOTE: Different sets of multiple choice questions will be used in the Qualifier Tie-
Break & Ranking Tie-Break.
− Based on the points-tallies from the Elimination Round and the one or both of the Tie-
Break Rounds, the 5 top teams will qualify and they will be ranked as 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5, in
descending order of their points-tallies.

− Tie-Break Rounds will be repeated with a different set of questions, till such time that we
arrive at 5 teams with distinct point-tallies.
Rules for Final Quiz
− 5 teams will qualify for the Final Quiz, based on their performance in the Elimination
Level discussed above.
− The Final Quiz will have 5 Rounds.
− The leading team will be asked the first question of every new Round. For Round I, the
order of teams is based on the ranking decided by the Elimination Level & Tie-Break
Round(s).
− After every Round, a new Ranking is given to the teams, based on their performance of
the previous Round.
− In case of a tie-break, the points of the previous rounds will be considered.
− Sub-Rounds = total questions per team for that Round.
− Quiz questions cover the following computer-related topics:
2) Hardware
3) Software
4) Networking
