Design and develop a c ommon reference plant for 800 MW and 923 MW
that c overs most of
the requirements of the large conventional steam plant market with
possibility to sc ale up to
designs consisting of two power blocks.

Client : Alstom Switzerland.

Softwares : CAESAR-II 5.00 and ROHR2 30.3b

Projec t description:
Design of c ommon reference Supercritic al Steam Power Plant for 800 MW
and 923 MW
involved providing various optimized solutions based on c ost of piping and
supporting, location of major
c omponents, ac cess and maintenance issues and so on. Various studies
c arried out for different options for
HP-CRH-HRH Piping, HP-LP Heater loc ations, effec t of advance materials
like P91, P92 and A617 (INCONEL
Alloy) on Piping stress, Various Cooling solutions for exhaust steam and
so on. These standardised system
designs and solutions were optimized based on following projects.
1. RDK 8 Germany, 912 MW, Superc ritical Steam Power Plant.
2. BELCHATÓW Poland, 858 MW supercritic al extension, Poland's largest
and most efficient Lignite - fired plant.
3. TERGA Algeria, 3 x 400 MW, Gas fired power plant.
4. SAFI Morocc o, 2 x 660 MW.
5. RYBNIK Poland, 1775 MW
6. KELAR 350 MW.
Stress Analysis of critic al piping like HP, HRH and CRH for Superc ritical
Power Plant subjected
high pressure (350 bar for HP) and temperature (727 C for HRH) called
for the use of
Materials like P92 for 800 MW and A617 (INCONEL Alloy) for 923 MW.
Qualifying these systems for Creep and Oc casional Stresses
was c hallenging. Boiler Header with 269 pipe connections was analysed
with the help of External Flexibility
Matrix.

Tasks exec uted:

·Pipe Routing and Stress analysis for Main steam lines, Ec onomizer lines &
Extrac tion lines for 800 MW and
923 MW Superc ritical Steam Power Plants as per EN 13480 and ASME
B31.1 codes.
- Creep, Wind and Seismic stress analysis as per c lient requirements.
- Pipe Support design by LICAD and generation of support drawings and
Loc ation plan.
- Support and Auxiliary beam sizing based on allowable deflection and
stress.
- Calc ulations for Line sizing, Thickness, Pump Head, Pressure drop,
Reinforc ement, External pressure etc.
- Preparation of General Arrangement drawings.
- Preparation of Piping Isometrics.
- Weld thic kness c alculation for Auxiliary beam weld design.
- Pipe, support and Auxiliary steel modeling in PDMS.
- Preparation of Bill of Materials.
- Vendor drawing review.

solutions were optimized based on following projec ts.
1. PEMBROKE UK, 2,160 MW, The largest c ombined-c yc le power plant in
the UK.
2. FUJAIRAH Phase 2 - United Arab Emirates, 2000 MW, The largest
newly construc ted independent
water & power project in the UAE
3. STAYTHORPE C - UK, 1650 MW, The second largest gas-fired plant in
the UK.
4. CARTAGENA Spain, 1200 MW.
5. GISSI Italy, 800 MW, Air-cooled condensers as a cooling solution.
6. MALAGA Spain, 420 MW
7. AGHADA - Ireland, 431.6 MW.
8. FLEVO - Netherlands, 2 x 435 MW.

Tasks exec uted:

General arrangement Layout Design and optimization in engineering
aspec t based on Process, Mec hanic al,
Civil and Elec trical requirements for BOP systems. Major work was done
for following systems.
a. Air Cooled Condenser system.
b. Main Cooling water system with Cooling Tower.
c . Direct/Onc e through c ooling system with Drum or Traveling band
screen mec hanism.

Objec tive of this Case Study was to analyse Steam flow performance of
different Air c ooled
c ondenser designs. Analysis carried out for only Pressure and Mass flow
distribution across different Cooling Steam
headers.
Tasks exec uted:
- Pressure Drop Analysis throughout the system.
- Interpreting results by analysing Pressure, Velocity, Contour and
Partic le tracking plots.
- Finding major causes of losses and rec ommend solution to reduce them
with Engineering and Industrial aspect.

Achievements:
- Suc cessfully c ompleted training in “Piping Engineering” from Suvidya
Institute of Tec hnology, Mumbai.
- BriTe GOLD certified in “Plant layout Design Optimization projec t” whic h
is equivalent to Green Belt in SIX Sigma certific ation standards.

artery and vein. It c arries the life blood of modern c ivilization. In modern
c ities they transport water, from the sourc es of water supply to the
point of distribution, convey waste from residential and c ommerc ial
buildings or point distribution. Similarly, pipelines c arry crude oil from oil
wells to tank farms for storage or to refineries for proc essing. Piping
