LTE Technical Overview

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The delegate attending this course will gain an in depth appreciation of the architecture and operation of
the LTE system including the OFDM based radio interface. As an introduction, the business of LTE and
the evolution of mobile broadband are examined and comparisons are made with HSPA and WiMAX
systems. Possible LTE services are discussed and then used to describe the capabilities required of the
radio and core network components.

The architecture of the LTE network (SAE) is explained and the functions of each network node, MME S-
GW, P-GW, eNB and interfaces X2 and S1 are discussed. The radio interface is based on OFDMA and
supports advanced features such as MIMO and interference management. These concepts are
explained as well as other radio related topics such as IMT spectrum allocations. The LTE protocol stack
and LTE procedures are also covered.

PRE-REQUISITES

Some understanding of mobile networks would be an advantage for those attending this course.

Describe the function of each LTE node
Explain the function of the main interfaces of the LTE network
Show how LTE may inter-work with other networks
Describe the advantages and disadvantages of an OFDM based interface
Understand the basic timing structure of the LTE radio interface
List the logical, transport and physical channels used on the LTE radio interface
Explain the basic operation of MIMO and describe its advantages
Describe the functions of each layer of the LTE protocol stack
Describe the procedure for network entry and location management
Show how data bearer are setup and QoS is managed in the LTE system
Describe two methods of supporting voice services in LTE.
Show how IMS may be used to support services across the LTE network.
