SAMPLE PEKA SCIENCE FORM 3

TEACHER’S MANUAL

1.0 Title: Experiment Two

PI 1:
2.0 Aim: To study the effect of the length of wire on the quantity of current.

3.0 Variables: a) Manipulated variable: length of wire

b) Responding variable: Quantity of current// ammeter reading

c) Controlled variable: Type of wire (nichrome wire) //

number of dry cells// thickness of wire.

4.0 Apparatus & Materials:

ammeter, dry cells, jockey, nichrome wire, metre rule, switch.

5.0 Method& Procedure:

 Figure 1 shows the arrangement of apparatus for experiment.

 The following are the steps taken:
 Step 1: Touch jockey Q on the nichrome wire where the distance
between P and Q is 0 cm.
 Step 2: Switch on and record the ammeter reading.
 Step 3: Repeat step 1 and step 2 by using nichrome wire with the
lengths of 10 cm, 20cm, 30cm, 40cm and 50cm respectively.

PI 2 : Carrying out experiment:

PI 3:
6.0 Results:
Table shows the ammeter readings of the respective lengths of nichrome wire.

Length of nichrome wire/cm 10 20 30 40 50

Ammeter reading/ A

PI 4:
7.0 Interpret Data:
From table, a graph of current against length of wire is drawn.

8.0 From the graph, the relationship between variables observed is:
The longer the nichrome wire, the smaller the quantity of current // the shorter
the nichrome wire, the greater the quantity of current.

9.0 Conclusion:

The length of nichrome wire determines/influences the quantity of current.

8.0. Answer the following questions:

(a) What physical quantity does the ammeter measure?
(b) Based on the result, state the relationship between the length of the
nichrome wire and the current?
(c) How does the brightness of the bulb vary with the resistance of the resistor?
What does this imply?
(d) Define operationally what is resistance?
(e) Based on the graph you have plotted , state the relationship between
resistance and current.
(f) Predict what will be the reading of the ammeter if the thickness of the
nichrome wire is increased?

9.0 Conclusion:
(a) Is your hypothesis acceptable?
(b) From the experiment that you have done, what is your conclusion?
