(one even has a real mini movie theater). Some are miles away.

frankly, some students choose not to live here because of the policy,”
says Ted Mehr, owner and developer of Sahara Apartments. “ We
look at Sahara Apartments as a sanctuary for students where they
can feel safe, secure and free from the usual commotion that goes
on in most student oriented apartment buildings. The kinds of
things that can disturb a student’s sleep or study time. As a student-
only property, we do not consider ourselves to be in the nightclub
business, or the bar and entertainment business. There are plenty
of choices for those activities all around Tucson. We are a student’s
home away from home.”
Sahara Apartments sponsors social events on a monthly basis.
These social activities are held both on and offsite. When they are
offsite, Sahara’s shuttle provides free transportation to the events and
brings the residents back. Residents can have their friends over and
socialize with them in the student lounge, entertain them

of Sahara was born out of my concern for my own daughter’s safety
as she was preparing for college. I wanted her to be in a safe and
comfortable living environment no matter where she lived. I simply
asked myself, what kind of place would I want my daughter to
live in for the times I could not be there to watch over her? Sahara
Apartments was my answer to that question.”

A Winning
Two new residence halls focus
on communityCombination

More than 1,000 students will be
welcomed to two vibrant new residence
halls in August 2011. The halls will focus
on community building, collaborative
learning and sustainable living. Artful
design elements and smart sustainability
are featured throughout Arbol de la Vida
and Likins Hall.
Smart sustainability for 21st
century living
Both halls seek top LEED certification
for sustainability and will educate students
through daily hands-on experiences in
sustainable living. Student rooms feature
“Smart” thermostats that recognize when
the room is unoccupied and reduce en-
ergy consumption while multiple “green”
outlets in each room shut off power when
the room is unoccupied. Large windows
open for ventilation and feature dual
window shades that allow for filtered light
or complete darkness. Roof-mounted solar
panels will provide approximately 75% of
the hot water at both halls. Community
bathrooms feature low-flow showerheads,
faucets and dual-flush toilets. Computer-
designed awnings on the south sides of
the buildings allow for optimal sunlight
in winter and block it in summer. Passive
water harvesting, storm water mitigation
and drought-tolerant plants are used for
landscaping. Finally, close to 80% of the
building materials are recycled materials.

Arbol de la Vida, A Global
Honors Community
Home to 719 honors students, Arbol
de la Vida (Tree of Life) is comprised of
five interconnected halls that ascend four
to six stories. The bold, urban architec-
ture anchors the southwest corner of
campus. Walkways and bridges connect
the halls at different levels while on
the inside, wide meandering corridors
feature student rooms, study rooms and
culminate at comfortable gathering
places. A spectacular two-story study
bridge features etched glass panels while
numerous large windows provide natural
light throughout the buildings. At the
main entrance etched glass panels depict
several beautiful flowing trees comprised
of poetry. On the southwest corner, a
two-story perforated copper screen radi-
ates with an image of a slot canyon.

Welcomes New Dean

come a new dean in May – University of
Arizona and Eller College alumnus Leon-
ard Jessup was named dean in January
following a nationwide search headed by
a committee of university leaders, faculty,
alumni, and students.
Jessup is currently chair of the Depart-

Jessup grew up in the San Francisco Bay
area, the son of Italian immigrants on both
sides of the family. “My family is a long line
of small businessmen and women dating
all the way back to our origins in ‘the old
country,’” he said. “The conversations and

‘Be A Friend. Do
Something.’ campaign
and website takes on
tough topics

Moving away from home, meeting new
people and discovering new interests are
all exciting aspects of college life. However,
in the midst of rigorous course schedules,
residence life, extra-curricular activities,
and busy social schedules students may
fail to recognize how much their closest
friends might be struggling.
In January of this year, the Dean of
Students Office and SafeCats launched “Be
A Friend. Do Something,” a website and
campaign that puts the onus on students
to be the friend who
takes action on behalf
of those in trouble and
see to it that they are
aware of the resources
available to help them
be successful at the
University of Arizona.
The website (www.
deanofstudents.arizona.edu/beafriend)
will be accompanied by an advertising
campaign consisting of posters, door tags
and fliers to be distributed throughout
campus.
“Be A Friend. Do Something.” is a one-
stop shop for no-nonsense advice on top-
ics like alcoholism, depression and suicidal
behavior, unhealthy eating habits, hazing,
sexual consent and threatening behavior.
Most important, it was designed in a way
that appeals to the undergraduate student
population.
Kendal Washington White, associate
dean of students, took notice of this in-
novative approach.
“The edgy and provocative photos,
creative use of language, and realistic
scenarios presented by the ‘Be A Friend.
Do Something.’ campaign and website is
an effective way to communicate what
friendship means when our friends are
experiencing a variety of concerning

behaviors,” Washington White said. “‘Be A
Friend. Do Something.’ empowers students
with relevant campus resources to help
their friends.”
Jason Casares, assistant dean of stu-
dents and campus safety coordinator, led
the team behind the project.
“The goal was simply to create some-
thing that was innovative and related to
students in their language,” he said. “The
images are real. The situations are real.
The words are real. These are the situa-
tions students experience every day. The
UA continues to be a safe place and we
challenge students to take notice and help
their friends.”
Though the spring 2011 semester
featured a soft launch, next fall will come
with a major push of “Be A Friend.”
“The students shared information and
knowledge gaps in a UA Safety Survey and
we responded,” Casares said. “We hope
to empower students with the ability to
respond in appropriate ways.”
In the coming months, the Dean of
Students Office is also looking to revamp
its alcohol and drug information website
in a style similar to that of “Be A Friend. Do
Something.”
“We continue to improve in how we
communicate with students about issues
related to safety on and off campus,” Casa-
res added. “SafeCats will push boundaries
and continue to create additional opportu-
nities for students to get good information
related to campus safety so every student
can make well-informed decisions.”

Living off Campus Next Year:

What to Consider
The chance that a student will
live off-campus sometime in
their college career is almost a
guarantee. There are a few things
to consider in helping find that
perfect place to call home.
Start Early: Begin searching at least 2
months before your planned move-in date. If you are
looking at a place for the spring, try to have a lease
signed before winter break. Most properties will
allow you to move in when you return in January.
Budget: What will your monthly expenses look
like? Include rent, utilities, groceries, transportation,
and entertainment expenses in your budget.
Roommates: Determine how many
roommates you would like and who they will be. It
is a great way to offset costs. Be careful of who you
choose for roommates as you may not really know a
person until you live with them.
Inspect the Condition: When you visit a
complex, ask to see the unit you will be renting, not a
model. Check areas such as appliances, doors, lights,
faucets, storage spaces, and other areas. If you want
the apartment only under the conditions that there are
repairs, get a written agreement from your landlord that
includes dates of completion.
Inspect for Security: Inspect the outside
of the complex to check for adequate lighting in parking
lots and other areas. Ask about security measures on
the property and if any incidents have occurred recently.
Also, inspect the unit to make sure all of the windows
and doors lock properly and there is a peep hole in the
front door.
Deposits: Be prepared to put down a deposit,
as most properties require one. It is usually the first
month’s rent. Most utilities also require a deposit for
new services.
Pets: If you own or want a pet, know the policies
of the housing provider before signing a lease. Some
places allow only certain types of pets while others do
not even allow them.
Leases: Leases come in many different lengths.
Some are month to month while others are for a
specified amount of time (i.e. 12 month, 6 month).
Make sure you understand everything in your lease.

Student Group Raises Thousands

for Brain Tumor Research

A University of Arizona student orga-
nization has raised more than $23,000 to
support brain tumor research – and its
members are poised to raise thousands
more.
The Students Supporting Brain Tumor
Research chapter was formed at the UA in
2008. The following year, student mem-
bers began fundraising efforts that have,
to date, resulted in more than $23,000 for

tion was founded in 2002 after two stu-
dents in the Paradise Valley School District
were diagnosed with brain tumors.
Born from a desire to expand public
knowledge about brain tumors, former UA
roommates Shannon Timms and Lindsey
Erlick in 2008 founded a local chapter of
Students Supporting Brain Tumor Re-
search, SSBTR.

Timms was involved in a Phoenix chapter
while in high school. For Erlick, her mo-
tivation was spawned after a high school
friend died as a result of a brain tumor.
“I didn’t want my involvement to stop,”
Timms said, who is studying marketing
in the UA’s Eller College of Management.
“I was telling Lindsey the things I was
involved in and she told me her story.”
Their student organization has since
teamed up with the UA Steele Children’s
Research Center to host a March 5 fund-
raiser at the UA Student Recreation Center.
The student organization will provide
funding to researchers at the Steele Center,
which is part of the Diamond Children’s

organization raises funds to aid with
research at the UA.
Medical Center. The event, “Fashion.
Music. Pool. For a Cure” included a fashion
show, a raffle, performances by UA School
of Dance students and the synchronized
swimming team and raised $2,550 for
brain tumor research.
“It’s a huge problem that many people
are unaware of,” Erlick said, adding that
brain tumors are the second leading cause
of solid tumor cancer deaths of individuals
aged 20-39.
“Before it happened, I had no knowl-
edge of brain tumors at all. I realized that
something needed to be done to both
spread awareness and raise funds for
research,” Erlick added.

oncology, and his team at the UA’s Steele
Center developed a therapeutic cancer
vaccine to treat patients. Since its develop-
ment, a bio-tech company obtained licens-
ing rights and has been conducting clinical
trials in Israel.
“Tucson is fortunate to have pediatric
cancer specialists right here, so children
don’t have to leave home to get the very
best cancer treatments,” Fayez K. Ghishan,
the Steele Center’s director, said in a pre-
pared statement. “We’re thrilled that the
UA students are showing their support.”
Erlick said she and others in the
15-member organization have been
motivated by the work of researchers at
University Medical Center and the UA
Steele Center.
“Shannon and I are both seniors, and
we hope the organization continues past
graduation,” Erlick said. “I also want to
encourage people to find something that
they are passionate about and follow
through with it.”

For 2011-2012, we estimate* that it would cost $10,262 to live in a single
occupancy ROOM for a total of 8 months. You live there from approximately
August 19 to December 18, (you HAVE to leave for the holidays) and then come
back from approximately January 9 to May 14.
When you live in one of Sahara’s single-occupancy studio apartments (with your
