JOB DESCRIPTION

Specific Title:
Capacity Building Coordinator

Reports to:
Manager of Student Enrichment, The University of Chicago Collegiate Scholars Program

Dates of Service:
This position will be needed throughout the UCCSP Summer Session, from June 27, 2011 through September 3,
2011. Hours will not exceed 37.5 per week.

General Summary:
The University of Chicago Collegiate Scholars Program (UCCSP) is a three-year enrichment program
specifically for Chicago public school students. UCCSP provides talented students with various academic,
cultural, social, and community service opportunities designed to help students succeed at outstanding
institutions of higher education. The Capacity Building Coordinator will provide overall coordination of the
Mosaic Stepping Stone Project in partnership with Emmitt Till Math & Science Academy and the 6500 South
Ingleside Block Club’s “The Children of Woodlawn Community Garden”. In addition, the Capacity Building
Coordinator will assist the Youth Development Coordinator as part of our “Leadership Initiative” by
developing strategies to guide our students through a variety of peer mentorship activities over the summer
including Intramural Sports.

Essential Functions: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Mosaic/Garden Project:
Goal: Assist CSP staff with the overall implementation of the Summer 2011 Mosaic Art Project. Develop and
present the Summer 2011 Mosaic Art Project to the Collegiate Scholars Program community (faculty, staff,
students, families, and UChicago faculty) at the End-of-Summer Culminating Event (8/5).

Work-Plan

Week One: 6/27-6/30


Orientation Week! Meet CSP staff members and support staff
Attend Freshman Orientation (6/25 7:30-4:00pm) Meet at South Campus Residence Hall for a “Day at
the Farm”: Run-away Buckers Camp, Momence, Ill This day will serve as an orientation to organic
farming as well as meeting our new incoming class of 2014 freshman students as they participate in a
series of team-building activities. (i.e., planting veggies, feeding chickens, goats, horses, etc.)
Introduction, tour of office area, work station and review policies and procedures
Meet with Maria Villarreal, Mosaic Artist for an overview of art project and implementation timeline.
Meet with Karen Phillips, President of the 6500 South Ingleside Block Club to get an overview of the
timeline for the garden project.
Meet with liaison at Emmitt Till Math & Science Academy who will coordinate student participants.
Responsible for chaperoning Collegiate Scholars students from campus to Emmitt Till for the art project
on Mondays & Wednesdays (3:00pm-6:00pm)
Collaborate with Freshmen & Upperclassmen Coordinators to assist you with getting students to a
meeting location for transportation.
Coordinate transportation to all site locations. (UC Van or Shuttle Service)
Responsible for taking attendance daily and submit to CSP office.
Work with Coordinators to provide a chaperone for Fridays.
Must develop a preliminary Plan Of Action (POA) of how you will organize, implement and present the
final presentation “Collegiate Scholars Going Green: The First Steps”. Begin development of the
garden/mosaic project presentation through different sources of media (suggestions include but limited
to a Blog site or eScrapbook) include how you will create an archival presentation (i.e. Blog,
eScrapbook)

Week Two-Four: 7/5-7/22


Implementation-Mosaic Art/Garden Project
Interviewing Community Historians and student participants
Responsible for chaperoning Collegiate Scholars students from campus to Emmitt Till for the art project
on Mondays & Wednesdays (3:00pm-6:00pm)
Collaborate with Freshmen & Upperclassmen Coordinators to assist you with getting students to a
meeting location for transportation.
Coordinate transportation to all site locations. (UC Van or Shuttle Service)
Responsible for taking attendance daily and submit to CSP office.

Week Five-Six: 6/27-6/30


Preparation for Culminating Event Presentation
Create eScrapbook/Blog site

Garden Work Schedule:


Monday-Thursday mornings: collecting stories of community residents on the 6500 South Ingleside
Block Club and students of Emmitt Till as they work in the garden and what it means to “go green” in
the Woodlawn community.
Monday and Wednesday afternoons: Mosaic stepping stone project at Emmitt Till School,
documentation of project and assist the artist as needed.

Qualifications:

Must be an undergraduate student with at least one year experience working in a professional office
environment or community setting in a leadership/management position.
Experience working with a youth organization, educational program, school or a non-profit
organization is a plus. Ability to work with diverse populations is essential.
Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated commitment to the pursuit of higher education and youth interests.
Computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, and Power Point are a plus.
Must be a highly motivated and independent worker and ability to work as a team player.
Must have flexible schedule, some evenings and weekends required.
