SA‐189 "America's First Golf Photo" 20x24
On the morning of February 22, 1888, John Reid told his friends to meet him on
the old cow pasture across from where he lived. Just days earlier, Reid had
received his precious cargo straight from Old Tom Morris’ shop in St. Andrews. On
that historic day, three golf holes, about 100 yards long, were laid out over the
bumpy terrain and cups were dug up from the ground with the head of a cleek.
Golf had finally come to America.

Peter O'Neill presides over the largest artist‐owned gallery in St. Augustine, Fla.,
posting sales of more than $500,000 a year, but success didn't come quickly or
easily to the New York native. O'Neill's childhood dream was to become an
artist, but he received little in the way of positive reinforcement. O'Neill could
never shake the feeling that art was his true calling in life. O'Neill is entirely self‐
taught, a fact of which he is quite proud. For O'Neill, art is a communication
between the viewer and the creator.
