Huntsman Advanced Materials will be reinforcing the company’s position as a global leader in the
manufacture and marketing of advanced adhesives, tooling materials and structural composites at
this year’s JEC with new product launches and a comprehensive product and applications display.
The paste for aero engines – Araldite® 1641 A/B – marks such a significant breakthrough in
composites technology that it has been nominated for a JEC Composites Innovation Award in the
Aeronautics category. The Award winners will be announced at JEC on 28 March 2006 in Paris.
New Products - Adhesives
Huntsman Advanced Materials is a leading supplier of structural adhesives for bonding composite
materials. The Araldite® range of adhesives comprises epoxy, polyurethane and toughened
methacrylate technologies, which are used in composite structures in road, rail, aerospace, marine
and wind energy applications. They are also used in a wide range of industrial markets including
automotive, construction and sport and leisure.
Three new adhesive products for the aerospace industry will be showcased at JEC, including a
unique epoxy based aerofoil-fill syntactic paste which the Araldite® team has developed in
conjunction with Rolls Royce and the University of Sheffield. It has been developed for use on the
Trent 900 aero engine.
Araldite® 1641 A/B is a very low density two-component syntactic paste which exhibits exceptional
noise and vibration damping characteristics. It can be used as a replacement for traditional metal
reinforcements in aerospace engine components like outer guide vains (OGV).
Huntsman are also launching Araldite® 1644 A/B and Epibond® 1590 FST A/B at JEC.
Araldite® 1644A/B is two-component low density RT-cure syntactic filler for structural applications. It
was designed to replace fibre reinforced resin in structural close-outs and hence shows exceptional
mechanical properties under hot/wet conditions after a RT cure cycle.
Epibond® 1590 FST A/B is a two-component flame retardant paste epoxy adhesive offering a good
balance of FST and mechanical properties. It can be cured at either room temperature or elevated
temperatures and exhibits good mechanical properties on both metal and thermoplastic substrates.
It has good environmental resistance and shows excellent stress crack resistance on thermoplastic
substrates.
Epibond® 1590 FST A/B has been designed for use in aerospace interior applications but is equally
suitable for all composite bonding fields where flame retardancy is critical.
Structural Composites – New Multifunctional Epoxy Resins
Huntsman’s Structural Composites business unit is a leading global producer of epoxy specialities
and high-value thermosets for fibre reinforcement technologies. It provides innovative product
solutions for a wide range of industries including the wind turbine industry, aerospace, automotive,
railway, electronics, high performance offshore pipes and concrete construction.
At JEC, Huntsman Structural Composites will be showing two multifunctional epoxy resins suitable
for a range of processing systems including Resin Transfer Moulding, Resin Film Infusion, Pre-pregs
and Filament Winding.
Araldite® MY 9721 is a multifunctional epoxy resin that is suitable for a wide range of industrial
composite applications and has been developed from the Araldite® MY 721 aerospace grade of tetra-
functional epoxy resin. While offering similar properties such as long pot life at process temperatures
and excellent retention of mechanical performance even at elevated temperatures, MY 9721, thanks
to a special manufacturing process, is a lower cost resin intended for high temperature resistant
industrial applications.
