Sunshine holdings limited is a new business venture which is venturing into

the energy industry. Sunshine holdings is a private business corporation
which is not yet registered but will register beginning of December 2012.

Currently in Zimbabwe there are two sources from which energy that are
electricity is processed from. The sources are Kariba hydroelectric power
and Hwange thermal power station. Due to excessive power cuts in that have
salvaged the nation of Zimbabwe people have resorted to firewood, solar
panels and gas stoves as well as generators for lighting and heating purposes
within their homes. The rural electrification program is at the moment
abandoned due to shortage of electricity. The electricity being processed is
not even able to carter for the already electrified areas of the country.
Currently the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) is importing
100 Megawatts of electricity from the Democratic Republic of Congo to try
and solve the problem of power cuts.

Looking into the future of the energy industry locally and internationally, it
is realized that especially for Zimbabwe the economy is coming from a
downtun.The reviving economy means that industrialization is growing thus
a growing capacity in terms of the power needed. However it is noted that
though the capacity of the needed power is increasing the capacity being
produced at ZESA is not increasing. More sources of power are going to be
required thus the business is expected to grow within the energy industry as
people will be opting for means which are of least cost though providing the
same product. This venture also seeks to substitute the imports by at least
50%.The import being the electricity from DRC.

The business venture is entering into a market with no competition in terms

of its operation. However there are many substitutes that are being employed
and these include the use of generators and solar panels.

The business venture is also trying to tame the pollutant gas methane by
producing power from it thus reducing the environmental pollution. Studies
have shown that the famous methane gas contributes about 32% of the air
pollution. Of the 32%, the 15% comes from cow dung and the other from
biogas that is human waste. This business venture seeks to tame the methane
gas in accordance with Environmental Management Act.

  



The legal name of the company is Sunshine Holdings Private Cooperation.
The company is not yet registered but intends to do so by the end of
December 2012.
Sunshine holdings workshop will be located in the southerton industrial area
and will have its offices or headquarters at:

Corner Kwame Nkurumah and Harare Street.
Operations are set to commence on the 1st of April 2013.Our first plant will
be launched in July 2013.The owners of the company are
Penelope Malunga, Lavinia Chikomo, Lorraine Chikomo, Prince Jinya,
CliveMadzima, Simbarashe Nyadenga and, Liberty Jeketera
Sunshine Holdings is a start up company therefore does not have any
history.

The idea of installing decomposable pit latrines which will be providing the
biogas methane came about as a result of the power cuts which were
salvaging the nation especially boarding schools which were no longer able
to conduct evening studies. Sometime in January 2011, one of the owners
Penelope Malunga went to St Francis of Assisi and realized that they had
spent five days without electricity. It was this situation that propelled her to
suggest this idea so as to counteract this problem. It was also realized that
we were having a shortage of energy but there was also energy which was
not being manipulated to provide the same service.

In terms of the product which we will be providing we really do not have

any competitors as it is a new idea that is coming into the market. However
the major threats are substitutes which of paramount importance are
generators and solar panels.

This is our greatest threat because it has managed to penetrate our target
market but however their weakness is that the maintenance costs of
generators are high in comparison to our plant. The other factor that makes
our product more favorable is that it is less costly because generators do
require fuel and the fuel costs are rising. One major set back of the people
who use generators in remote areas is that fuel filing stations are not readily
available thus it makes our product very efficient.

Solar panels are a very efficient way of harnessing energy but they present
their own problems. Given our target market which has a high population
density it¶s relatively expensive to install as many solar panels to provide
sufficient enough and constant supply of electricity. In addition the batteries
have a life span and should be constantly acidified by Sulphuric acid as a
result cost of maintenance supersedes the benefits. Solar panels are also
subject to weather conditions as thebatteries will not be fully charged thus
bigger appliances will not be able to function as required higher voltages.

Sunshine holdings is in the provision of cheap electricity through the

installation of decomposable pit latrines. The methane gas which is used as a
major role material is harnessed from the decomposition of human waste
through the addition of a digestive enzyme which is cow dung. The process
for the production of electricity is outlined below in the flow sheet fig 1

The methane from the pit latrines is collected into a main septic tank by the
use of pipes. The plant will be erected at the place where the major septic
tank will be located. It is well known that methane is collected by upward
delivery so they will be a collection tank which will be built on top of the
septic tank and will be linked by a pipe. The methane in the tank will be
compressed and is used to heat water in a water tank. The mechanism is
connected to a mini vapor power plant. The vapor power results in the
realization of our final product, electricity.

Simbarashe Nyadenga brings to the company his leadership expertise in
people management and he is studying for a Bachelor of Technology in
Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Sunshine holdings will have a functional organizational structure which is

hierachial as depicted by the organogram.Plans are also underway to see to it
that the senior management team further their studies in their respective
areas of operation.

Sunshine holdings aretargeting market segments which are densely
populated examples of such areas are missionary schools, farm compounds
and market places.

The pricing strategy will be a value based approach which follows from our
position of being a high quality producer. A market research was conducted
(a questionnaire is attached in the appendices) and it was established that
customers prefer a product that is dependable, cost effective and durable. It
therefore follows that Sunshine Holdings pricing will be market skimming.

From this market research it was also established that 60% of the target
market is using ZESA as their main source of electricity, 35% use generators
and 5% use solar panels. Therefore sunshine holdings foresee potential in
this market and seek to acquire at least 50%.

Since sunshine holdings is a startup we will advertise so as to inform our

target customers about our new product. We will also conduct a direct man
to theme vehicles and we will take it upon ourselves to travel to places
where network is unavailable so that all people are informed of the new
service on the market.
Sunshine holdings has decided that it will use media such as internet , direct
mail, bill boards, newspapers and magazines as well as televisions and
radios to reach our target market.

Sunshine Holdings will emphasize the following features of the product:-

No power cuts
Less expensive as it is a once off payment unlike ZESA, after installation
one needs to continue paying monthly bills but with our product no such
expenses are incurred

It has been identified that people need electricity all year round so the timing
for our marketing activities will be all year round thus it will be heavy
advertising from the day we will commence operation until our sales start to
increase and then will moderate.
