STOP, THINK AIDS AND GO!

HIV/AIDS Awareness Game

Supplies needed:
1. Cards with instructions on how to play the game (see summary instructions below)
2. 2 rolls of yellow duct tape, 2 rolls of green duct tape, 2 rolls of red duct tape, 2 rolls
of blue duct tape, 3 rolls of grey duct tape for the game board
3. A tape measurer to put the game board together
4. 8 cardboard cubes/dice (made of 6 pieces of cardboard 7”x 7") each put together
with a different color of duct tape. This means you will have 2 yellow dice, 2 green
dice, 2 red dice, and 2 blue dice
5. Two sets of large numbers 1-20 to put on the game board
6. Clear contact paper to go over the statements on the dice and on the game board so
they do get damaged
7. A bowl of wrapped candies-perhaps 500 pieces
8. A kitchen timer to set for one minute
7. A bell

Game Instructions:
Enter at start with one to three partners. Throw the dice that is the same color as the
square on which you are standing. Read aloud the top of the dice and follow the
instructions (note: you move as a team). Pay attention to the number in each square -
they indicate the order of the game board- they are not in order. Read aloud the
messages on the floor. When you move to a new color, leave the previous color dice
behind. Keep in mind this is not a competition.

Two yellow dice with the following statements:


1. My mother was HIV+ and she took antiretroviral drugs during her pregnancy and I
was born without HIV--Go forward 4 spaces.
2. Your mother is HIV+ and cannot breast feed you and has no money for formula. You
are very hungry. Go back one space or stay at start.
3. I have been excluded from school because I am HIV+. Go back 2 spaces or stay at
start.
4. God’s love includes everyone. The people in your church are including you and
helping me to get health care. Go forward 5 spaces.
5. I didn’t pay attention during health class because I’m not gay and I don’t do drugs.
Go back 2 spaces
6. I entered the Global AIDS poster competition. Go forward 3 spaces.

Two green dice with the following statements:
1. My friend is sexually active and I convinced him to use a condom. Go forward 5
spaces.
2. I traded sex for money to buy food for my family. I can earn more if I have
unprotected sex and now I am HIV+. Go back one space.
3. I use drugs. I share a needle with my friends. Go back 2 spaces.
4. God calls for justice for all. I wrote to my senator and asked for more money for the
Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Go forward 4 spaces.
5. I participated in a worship service for World AIDS Day. Go forward 2 spaces.
6. I am a young, gay man and I am sexually active and I don’t use condoms. I don’t
have to worry about AIDS because the medicine will make me well. Go back 2
spaces.

Two blue dice with the following statements:


1. I live in Tanzania. I’m HIV+. There is no medical treatment in my village. Once a
week I can walk to a clinic 10 miles away and get some aspirin. Crawl back one
space, crawl forward one space.
2. I have good health insurance and I live in the United States. I have access to
medical treatment that helps me manage my symptoms even though I am HIV+. Go
forward 4 spaces. Pray for those who do not have access to treatment.
3. Stand with Africa works with churches and communities to overcome AIDS, produce
enough food to eat and sell, and build peace at the grassroots. I contributed some
of my money. Go forward 3 spaces.
4. I’m a homeless woman. I’m HIV+. I need to take my drugs every 8 hours or they
won’t work. I don’t own a watch. Go back a space.
5. I went into a drug treatment program because many of my friends have become
HIV+. Go forward 5 spaces.
6. I’m an AIDS orphan in the Congo and I can’t go to school so I will be forced to work
on the street. Go back 3 spaces.

Two red dice with the following statements:


1. I refused to talk to a classmate who was HIV+ -go back 3 spaces
2. I led a youth forum on HIV/AIDS prevention-go forward 4 spaces.
3. I volunteered to staff an AIDS hotline-go forward 3 spaces.
4. Jesus broke bread with people that society didn’t like. I ate dinner with a friend who
was HIV+ and drank from her glass-go forward 5 spaces
5. I saw someone who was homeless and I crossed the street because I thought he
had AIDS-go back 2 spaces.
6. My friends and I made fun of a classmate whose mother was HIV+-go back 3
spaces.

Game board
The game board is 20 ft x 20 ft and has 20 (twenty) 5 ft x 4ft squares in it (see drawing).
The game board takes a good 2 hours to put together if you are working alone. You
should practice putting the game together and playing it before the actual event.

1. Outline the entire game board with grey duct tape


2. outline the inter part of squares 1-5 with yellow duct tape
3. outline the inter part of squares 6-10 with green duct tape
4. outline the inter part of squares 11-15 with blue duct tape
5. outline the inter part of squares 16-20 with red duct tape

Special signage for the game board


This signage needs to be taped to the floor with contact paper over them so they don’t
get damaged. You also need a sign that indicates where start is.

Square 1 Nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of God.

Square 2 Tell the team behind you there is no cure for HIV/AIDS. Treatment is
expensive and doesn’t always work. You need to learn how to protect
yourself. After you share this message, take a free turn.

Square 3 God's love includes everyone.

Square 4 This is Kenya. You are an AIDS orphan. You have no home. You are
HIV+. You die alone. Go back to start.

Square 5 God calls for justice for all.

Square 6 Jesus broke bread with people that society didn't like.

Square 7 This is Togo. No doctor is trained to give AIDS medicines. You die. Go
back to start.

Square 8 The ELCA Hunger Program supports Stand with Africa.

Square 9 An article you wrote about HIV/AIDS prevention is published in the school
newspaper and you won an award. Life is sweet. Take one piece of
candy and take a free turn.

Square 10 Speak up for people who cannot speak for themselves.

Square 11 Protect the rights of all who are helpless.

Square 12 God calls us to act justly, to love tenderly to walk humbly with our God.

Square 13 This is South Africa. Some politicians are saying AIDS is a myth. Yell
“Liar, liar” as loud as you can.

Square 14 What would you say for people who don’t have a “voice”? Talk amongst
yourselves for a minute.

Square 15 Yell “I am an instrument of God’s peace” as loud as you can.

Square 16 It’s time to call together the support group for friends of people who have
HIV. Ring the bell three times.

Square 17 Stand and see what other teams are doing. Wave to the people who are
starting.

Square 18 Talk about this experience at your closing session.

Square 19 You’re HIV+ and you’re not taking time for yourself. Set the timer for one
minute and take time out.

Square 20 The ELCA Hunger Program supports Stand with Africa.
