lifetime cancer risk of 40 to 50 percent).
Health effects other than cancer from radiation
exposure are not likely when the dose to the fetus is
very low.
Most researchers agree that babies who receive a
small dose of radiation (equal to 500 chest X-rays or
less) at any time during pregnancy do not have an
increased risk for birth defects. The only increased risk
to these babies is a slightly higher chance of having
cancer later in life.
The fetus is made up of only a few cells during the
first two weeks of pregnancy. Damage to one cell can
cause the death of the embryo before the mother even
knows that she is pregnant. Of the babies that survive,
however, few will have birth defects related to the
exposure, regardless of how much radiation they were $VSHFLDOSODFH

Simon was a little skeptical at supple-

use no soap on Jane’s skin. No lotions. No

smells wonderful. Water is a wonderful
cleanser all by itself. They use cotton
diapers and the “rubber pants” are woolen,
hand knit by Simon’s mother with untreated
wool that contains a lot of natural lanolin.
The lanolin remains when washed at cool
temperatures. Most of the time the woolen
“rubber pants” are not soiled and they air
dry between uses; the lanolin combined
with urine neutralizes any smell. On the
rare occasion that they use disposable
diapers because of being away from home,
Jane’s bottom becomes red and they need to
apply zinc oxide.

You want to keep them involved, minds

Sadly, many kids become addicted to the “visual

Summer camps hold a great resource and there’s

Fest celebrates Fort Wayne’s rivers

BY SUSAN ALDERMAN
Imagine a Saturday late in June; your
family surrounded by a lush green
landscape. Mix in an historic river
spanned by an exquisite bridge; add in
fun and educational activities on and off
the water; then sprinkle in an arts and
crafts show and sale and blend in a
farmers market for added flavor. Stir in
your favorite food vendors; add a liberal
dash of live music; and top it all off with
a dazzling display of fireworks.
