Design Analysis and Gallery Report Evaluation

Design Analysis
Using magazines, books and or the internet as a source for images, (NOT YOUR TEXT BOOK) find one example for
each of the elements and principles of design, listed below. The image may represent a painting, a sculpture,
graphic design, architecture or any other form of visual expression that we have studied.
_______Mount the image on a sheet of 8.5” X 11” paper, number it, write the name of the principle or element and
write its definition. Then write a statement expressing why your image is a good example.
_______Also, draw on the image if needed to explain how the principle or element is present in the work. Identify
colors if necessary to the explanation and your image is not in color.
_______If your source is a magazine, cut out the image, if it is a book, Xerox the image, and if you use the internet,
print the image.
_______Mount all ten sheets in a folder in the correct order.

Gallery Report
_________Begin by visiting a local Gallery or Art Museum. Select a work of art that interests you, (it must
be an original not a reproduction) and write a one or two page, typed report on the work.
________Include the name of the gallery or museum, the title of the piece, the artist’s name and the
medium.
________Then describe the work, using vocabulary from class. Touch on the formal elements, as well as,
subject matter and content.
________Finally, explain what you liked about the work. You must see the work in person!
________Place the gallery report in the same folder as the design project and clearly label the cover with
your name, date and class.
You must submit a photo of yourself in front of the artwork. You will need to turn in a “hard
copy” of the gallery report on Wed. Nov. 17th. You will need to submit an electronic copy
also. Instructions for this will be given in class.
