ARTWORK 7
In July 2008, Filiz moved from Boston in the U.S. to Amman, Jordan.
Her new home offered a lot of inspiration. Interpreting the collection of
new stimuli in the form of sights, sounds, and daily interactions, her
paintings translated her impressions of Jordan; from the city and busy
energy of Amman, to the ancient rocks of Petra, to the desert sands of
Wadi Rum. Work and life took her next to the Caribbean where the change in culture offered much food for thought
as well as warmth in the sun and sea.
Filiz’s current work explores territory beyond the retinal experience into memories and subconscious impressions.
Her paintings are an exploration of the seen and the unseen; imagined and tangible landscapes. Compelled to paint
what she sees and feels, her work is a combination of the world around her and life experiences. Filiz’s work reveals to
the viewer the concept of a life and place beyond words and representational images.
Attracted to the energy of ancient places and worn surfaces, Filiz’s work tells a story behind every mark and scratch.
She uses mixed media to create depth through layers of
acrylics, oil pastels, sands, photography, and collage of
handmade and found papers. An intuitive painter, she
tries to finish each painting in one sitting to grasp the
often fleeting moments and moods.
Filiz’s work has been exhibited and collected internationally. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

On all of Filiz's work you will see a symbol. This is called a Hanko. It is a seal, also called a
"chop" or stamp, commonly used in Asia on official documents, art, or anything needing acknowledgement of ownership or
authorization in lieu of a signature. In Japan, specially made hankos, called "Jitsu-in", are officially registered. They are then
required on documents from titles and receipts to bank drafts and contracts.
Traditionally, artisans in Japan often have used square or rectangular seals recognized for
unofficial documents or work. Seals are usually made from stone, and carved by hand, though
you can find them made from wood, ivory or plastic. A red ink is most often used.
Filiz spent much of her childhood in Japan. Upon returning to Tokyo as an adult, and launching
her career as an artist, a close family friend gifted her with a custom stone-carved Hanko. It was a
very meaningful gift. Filiz's Hanko reads right to left, top to bottom, "Filiz Emma" in Katakana.
Since receiving her Hanko, in 2002, Filiz has used it to sign all of her work. You will find
it in different locations and colors on her work but often it will fall on the lower left
quarter of her work. The signature changes color to work in harmony with the
painting. For work on paper, Filiz uses the traditional red ink.
Not only is it a signature, but it has also become a symbol for completion. It is always
difficult to know when a painting is "finished". Filiz has established a personal "rule"; she
does not work on a painting after stamping, or sealing her work, with the Hanko. The
main reason Filiz incorporates her seal within her art is to signify the importance of
Japan to her inspiration, influence and development as an artist.
