GIS Application in Electricity

What is GIS?
It is a digital system for gathering, processing and
analyzing data of a spatial nature by using the modern
techniques

GIS Applications

One of most important GIS applications in electricity is the documentation

of the electrical net’s data and projecting it’s location geographically like
identifying the net components and feeders routes.
GIS Applications in the field of electricity
A Successful way of treatment with the net’s components and
identifying flow direction of the electric current.
GIS application in the electrical field
Find and identify breaking
down locations and
directing maintenance
teams to these locations.

Documentation of the coordinates of the power transmitting

towers to be used for field studies

Presenting data on a geographical Map
GIS application in the electrical field

The majority of ground cables connections and joints can not be found
without the assistance of the concerned persons. Now maps can be
used to identify and reach these (cables and joints) easily

Infrastructure in Basra
Electricity sector in Basra
There are three general directorates for power activities in
Basra:
- South region Power production.
- South region power distribution.
- Power transmission.
- In addition to the south control center in Khour Al zubair,
communication directorate in Al Najebia.

GIS applications in the electricity field
By using GIS, a data base of Regions development projects for (2008) has
been prepared as shown in the following example:
Obstacles

- This system needs a huge budget depending on the area and

required functions.
- High costs of the soft ware and these programs need high
quality computers.
- Difficulty of getting the information (data) because of maps
damage .They were kept in bad conditions.
- Bad coordination between directorates which are picking up the
Information and others who are using them.
– Difficulty of getting most of the data because of secrecy.
- Inability to establish GIS center in Basra.

Despite these obstacles we have to use this program for the

following reasons:

- Narrowing the scientific gap between our country and the

developing countries which have already adopted this program.
 - Rescuing the remaining data and maps from damage.
