1.Introduction:

Many young children use a personal computer. They use it to play games, do class

assignments, communicate with friends and relatives and for social networking. The guardians

allow them to do so because of the scarcity of time and place for doing outdoor works. So the better

way to spend time is to spend on computer. For most of the kids, it has become a regular friend. The

urban children are getting used to the habit of spending hours on computer. This has some good

sides indeed. But the bad sides are greater. And they cannot be overlooked. Using computer is an

essential part of life now a days, but the main argument is to use it correctly and without causing

any harm to the future.

The first part of the thesis is designed with the statistical analysis of the rate of of young

computer users, their basic activity and their current condition of body and mind. The either part is

the analysis of those data and the last part consists of the future possibility of disaster and its

awareness. The concluding part has some instructions how the upcoming disaster can be stopped

and the way out.

Technology is a vital part of our life, now a days we can not go without it. Headache does

not result in cutting off your head. In the same way, we can not think of development without

exposing the young boys and girls to the technology. But it is important to control the whole process

and this is the only way to get rid of the current and upcoming problems.

2.Research Areas:
There are several topics that had been the key findings for my research. The whole research

was based on those topics and their result. There are six key topics that came forward when the

research was started. So, the whole research is based on those topics. The result was the combined

result of those topics. The research concluded with the result. The topics are described below.

2.1 What are the causes of having a personal computer at an early age:

Its easy to find a young boy or girl using a personal computer. The rate is on the increase.

Use of technology in all the major places is the main cause of it. We can feel the use of computer in

all the sectors now. Starting from education, it ends up in the sector of entertainment. What can not

be done with a computer. So its really important to be familiar with such a machine. Another cause

of using a personal computer form very childhood is as the replacement of outdoor entertainment.

According to Rajuk(Rajdhani unnayan corporation)(2011) only 3% of the total land in Dhaka city

belongs to the playground. So the children can not get the opportunity to play outdoor games and

sports. The only way remains to entertain themselves is playing games in computer. There are

several more causes. People are very busy nowadays. They don't give enough time to their children.

For the same reason, urban people cannot be physically in touch with their kith and kin. This is

where a personal computer works as a way of social communication. And so social networking sites

are very much popular. Young children are seen wasting a lot of time on sites like Facebook ,

twitter, hi5 or other social networking sites. Its not their fault, man is a social being, so every man

has some social need. The young generation chose social networking sites to satisfy their social

needs. For all these reasons, personal computer is getting more and more popular among youth. The

guardians do allow the usage of computer for two reasons. The first one is to ensure that the young

children does not get bored, and another vital thing is, most of the guardians don't understand

technology properly and so they don't have the idea about what their children are doing. They just
3

believe in what their children say.

2.2How is the facility and scope of outdoor games in cities:

In big cities like Dhaka, most of the young children get the chance to play outdoor games.

There are two major causes of this problem. First of all, there are a few numbers of playgrounds in

Dhaka city. According to Sharma (2010,para.1) there are only 21 playgrounds for 1.5 Cr people of

Dhaka city. This is why most of the children have no chance to play outdoor games. This is only the

calculation for Dhaka city , the rest of the world ,specially developed countries also lag the number

of playgrounds.

Another cause is competition. The world is getting more and more competitive. And the

competition begins from the birth. The competition began when we were a Sperm (Hirani, 2009,

p.2) . We don't get enough time for refreshment. The children don't get enough time to play in the

playground. Hanging up with computer is regarded as a skill building work, so parents allow to do

so.

2.3 What is the effect of computer on human body:

Computer has a great and permanent bad effect on human body. It affects our eyes , our

brain, our blood circulation system, and our nervous system. Excessive computer usage can cause

the digestive system malfunction, it reduces the amount of fat ejection and makes us fat, it makes

body unstable. The parts of computer produce electromagnetic radiation which has a harmful effect

on human body. According to light:

As the body begins to break down from the overload of disruptive frequencies, the immune

system is frequently the first to dysfunction, since it is has to overwork to accomplish the

nearly impossible task of protecting the body. Many of the immune system disorders today
4

(allergies, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, candida, asthma, cancer, Alzheimer’s, fibromyalgia,

and other inflammatory illnesses) are created or exacerbated by living in the overwhelming

electronic soup in which we all find ourselves. (2008).

If a child is exposed to such a situation from the childhood, it may result in serious dangerous

diseases.

2.4 What are the effects of computer games on children:

Most of the children spend time playing computer games. The games are of various type.

Some are action games, some are racing games, some are mind games, some are computer version

of popular sports like football or cricket , and some maybe funny or artistic. The games affect the

imitative minds of children. Children start to change the world around them. They pay less attention

, spend less time on education, does not like eating, they start to behave rough and playing violent

games may lead to real violence.

One of the research of Gentile(2004) shows that adolescent girls played video games for an

average of 5 hours a week, whereas boys averaged 13 hours a week .(p.6). And the rate is almost the

same as they intend to study. Children start to play more and more and the rate increases. This is

like a chain reaction which results in ruin.

But though, computer games also have some positive points. Some computer games help to

be creative. Some games help learning, and some games help to me innovative, some teaches to be

social and some other games help to behave better, but the rate is really low and the harms are

greater.

2.5 How computer make children creative:

5

computer makes children creative. Bennetts states that :

judging from the positive views expressed in a FamilyPC online poll of 615 families

conducted by Digital Research, an independent research firm. The survey found that 68

percent of the parents who responded believe that computer usage has helped their children

to become smarter. Those parents think the computer has helped their children master motor

skills and a wide range of tasks, including problem-solving, reading, math,

language/communication, spelling, research, and vocabulary. And a substantial majority of

the parents surveyed—61 percent—say the computer has made their kids more creative.

(para.10)

The research proves that most children learn faster with computer. And they become smarter and

sharper if they are given a personal computer with a firm supervision.

2.6 How to guide children towards the right way:

Children are imitative. They are also polite in most of the cases. If they are given proper

guidance , they can produce a better output. Technology cannot be taken apart from the upcoming

generation. But the proper use is necessary. Proper use is possible if and only if the guardian have

the proper sense of technology. If the guardian have enough knowledge of use and abuse, the

children won't be able to learn the abuses until they have enough knowledge to differentiate

between the right and the wrong. This way they will learn the positive things of technology.

3.Hypothesis:
6

Most of the young children in cities are exposed to computer at an early age. They are given

computer as the alternative of outdoor activity and as a skill building machine. But the in most of

the cases, the computer is being abused. Children play violent games, spend hours on social

networking sites, browse through adult contents, and waste time for nothing. This facility is being

abused because of the guardians. They can't give enough time to their children. Can't observe what

they are doing and can't afford outdoor facilities. In most of the cases, guardians even don't have the

proper knowledge about what their children are doing sitting in front of the computer, as they don't

even know the basics of it. Providing children with computer form childhood may result in a great

success if proper guidance is applied.

4.Methodology:
I had to work on two different subjects for conducting the full research. The primary target

group was children who have been using computer from childhood. I conducted a survey to find out

their current condition(Appendix 2.1) and made a rational graph to find out the result. Besides , I

took interviews of two person who have been using computer from a very early age.(Appendix 4).

My secondary target were guardians, who provided computer to their children from early age. I

conducted another survey on them(Appendix 2.2). Then made another graph from the information. I

also went to computer CD/DVD and hardware shop to find out what kind of product children are

interested in. I collected the result in my result collection sheet(Appendix 2.3) and analyzed that

too. I had to go through a lot of websites and blogs to collect some more information. I summed up

all the data and finally got the result.

7

Data Presentation
8

6.1Survey # 1 Data analysis:

Data from Survey 1 Shows that, most of the young children use computer to play computer

games(fig 5.1). And social networking. These things are very much addictive. So the young children

get addicted to them and start playing more and more games. This increases their time of using
9

computer that results in wearing glasses(fig 5.2) at an early age, and inattentiveness(Fig 5.3). the

graph shows that the addiction rate varies by age. And children aged between 11-13 get more

attracted and more addicted(Fig 5.4). This makes them completely separated from the society and

the rest of the world. They live in their imagination and behave strange.
10

6.2Survey # 2 Data analysis:

The result of survey 2 shows that, guardian with a good guidance often give time to their

children and look after what the children are up to and what should be better for them. They are

always aware of their child's computer activities. It is also very clear that without knowing at least

the basic of computing, a guardian can not check what his/her child is doing. This relates to the
11

most important thing of parenthood. Parents who give enough time and resource to their children,

often get befitted.

12

6.3 Survey # 3 Analysis:

Survey 3 shows that most of the children spend money on computer games and gaming

devices. This states the same thing that had been proved throughout the whole process. The regular

hardware and software are essential to run a computer so the purchase rate is relatively high.

Movies are another point where kids waste a lot of money. Most of the kids love to listen to music,

though the rate is relatively low. This is because of the illegal music sharing, piracy and music
13

download. But its a matter of great sorrow that only 5% of the customer buys learning software.

This may happen due to the unwillingness of learning . Or the high price of learning materials.

6.4: Interview 1

Biography:

7.Conclusion:

Having a personal computer at an early age may result in good or bad situation. The children

are very much sensitive and they like to imitate. This is why its important to guide them to the

proper way. The guardians play the main role in doing it. Computer is important for children, its

easy to learn and fun to use. Its also a good way to spend time, but parental supervision is much

important. Because effect of having a personal computer depends on the guardian's behavior, the

amount of time he/she gives to his /her children and the care that a children receives.
16

8.Limitations:

Conducting a survey had not been an easy task for me. There were many obstacles on my

way, the greatest problem that I faced was my sickness. I had to take full bed rest for a whole week

that shortened the research time. Another problem was unavailability of materials. I had to wirk

very hard to find each quote and reference. People now a days are not very co operative, this is why

they don't want to take part in surveys and don't intend to give data. Some give wrong and

vulnerable data that hampers the total research process, during the research , I also faced a lot of

people who were unwilling to give the correct information. The lack of internet facility in many

areas had been another obstacle for me. I could not conduct online surveys on many targeted people

because of the lag of internet. But finally I finished the research successfully by the grace of

almighty.
