Trip Circuit Supervision

1 Introduction
1.1 Application
The Protective devices of the MiCOM Px30 series e.g. P63x, P139, P439, C232,.... , allows the
supervision of the control circuits of the circuit breakers TRIP-Commands (Trip circuit supervision).
Depending on the number of the freely available potential free binary inputs as well as the auxiliary
voltage (control voltage) and the impedances of the circuit breaker´s coil different procedures are
provided.
It is to be differentiated generally between the procedures with one or two binary inputs (BI)
respectively. When using two binary inputs trip circuit failures are detectable in all switching status
of the circuit-breaker; a restricted supervision however is provided , when using the procedure
with one binary input.

1.2 General Information

The following description refers to the Protection & Control Unit MiCOM P139 but are however
applicable also in principle for all the other devices of the MiCOM Px30 series accordingly, as per
available Inputs and Outputs peripherals.

The binary inputs available in the MICOM Px30 series are provided with a specialized Voltage /
Current characteristic , which guarantees a high degree of fail-safeness over a wide range of the
operating voltage ranging from 24 V ... 250 V -.
At the same time for the higher operating voltage a limitation of the power loss takes place due to
the current consumption (current drain) extensively independent of the voltage.
Due to this characteristic by connecting in series one or two binary inputs with the trip coil of the
circuit breaker respectively, it is possible to supervise the trip circuit with a limited current without
being the circuit breaker is operated.

The designations of function groups and settings, contained in this application guide, correspond
to the designations in factory delivered data models. Changes of designation texts can be made
over the text replacement tool with the setting program MiCOM S1 S&R-103.

2 Procedures for Trip circuit supervision

2.1 Trip circuit supervision with two binary inputs

In case of the trip circuit supervision with two binary inputs (Fig. 1) one binary input of the
respective protection device is connected parallel to the General Trip-Command (e.g. –K901)
while the second binary input is connected parallel to the circuit-breaker auxiliary contact
(- Q0-s1).

This procedure is suitable for the supervision of the control voltage, the supervision of the trip
circuit in case of an interruption as well as for the function of the circuit breaker via an auxiliary
contact of the circuit breaker.

Prerequisite for this procedure of the trip circuit supervision is that the control voltage shall have
twice the value of the switching voltage of the binary inputs (UA³ 2·UBImin). The Px30 series
devices have UBImin = 16V-. Therefore this procedure should be applied from the nominal voltage
starting above 32V-(e.g. 48 V-).

Figure 1 Trip circuit supervision with two binary inputs (Principle representation)
Depending upon the switching status of General trip command relay and the circuit breaker the
binary inputs of the protection device are energized accordingly. Table 2 provides an overview of
the different switching status. Activated binary inputs are represented with logical status „H“ and
inactivated binary inputs with „L“ in the Table 2.

Starting from the operating condition with closed circuit breaker -ON-position (Condition „1“) the
operating condition „2“ occurs if the protection relay trips or the control voltage is missing.
This condition may occur only during the operating time of the circuit breaker and is therefore
supervised by the LOGIC (Figure 2) . After reaching the final position „OFF“ (TRIP) the trip circuit

Px30/DE AS Aa 5 / 13
MiCOM Px30

is opened via auxiliary contact –Q0-S1E ( The coil is denergized), but is closed again via binary
input –U904 and –Q0-S1A. Consequently in condition „3“ with opened circuir breaker
(OFF-Position) a trip coil supervision takes place. Due to the current limitation via BI 2 no
energization of the coil takes place. The General trip command remains persisting via –K901 till it
is de-energized by the protection device. Also after the trip command has been executed
(Condition „4“) the trip coil supervision remains preserved via binary inputs connected in series.

The logical link of both the binary inputs takes place in the programmable logic. It is advisable for
the assignment of the binary inputs not to use the LOGIC Inputs 1..4 EXT, as these are
automatically transmitted via communication interface. For the local indication via LEDs or for the
issuance of alarm content „Trip circuit faulty“ via relay contacts the LEDs as such the output
contacts are to be assigned (Function group „LED“ or „OUTP“) respectively for the applicable
alarm „LOGIC output 1(t). These assignments are not contained in Figure 2.
So that during the circuit breaker operating time no failure alarm shall be generated, a timer with
operating delay is assigned to the logical link. A fast reaction to disturbances in the trip circuit is
guaranteed by setting the timer to 2s. A possibly necessary prolongation of the trip commands, a
respective latching or a parallel wired trip command do not affect the functionality of the
supervision.

Under this condition the two binary inputs can be activ, but they must not be. This is however meaningless for the supervision.

After elimination of the fault in the trip circuit the fault signal will be resetted back automatically. A
necessary latching of the indicators or relay output contacts can be configured in the Function
group „LED“ and / or „OUTP“.

2.2 Trip circuit supervision with one binary input

If there is only one binary input available, the trip circuit supervision can also be realized in two
different variants by using additionally a resistor.

2.2.1 Trip circuit supervision with resistor in series with CB coil

In place of the second binary input via circuit breaker auxiliary contact according to 2.1 a high
ohmic resistor (R) is used for the purpose of closing the current circuit in case of the cicruit
breaker Trip (OFF). Since due to the settings the trip command can persist longer or is in a
latched position, additional measures should be met to block the trip circuit supervision, in order to
avoid maloperation.

If the circuit breaker is closed (ON) and there is no tripping command existing, the trip circuit is then
closed via binary input and the trip coil. In case of a trip command the binary input is shorted via
General trip command and remains in this state until this trip contact or one from a parallel
connected external protection device is de-energized. For a desired latched trip command of the
supervised device the signal General trip command itself and not the relay is to be configured as
latched and is to be used as a blocking signal in the programmable logic (not applicable for Distance
protection devices P43x). For longer hold-timer (external oder internal) the timer can be set upto 600
s. However, after the expiry of the preset duration a fault in the trip circuit or non availability of the
control voltage will be signalized.

Figure 4 Logical diagramme for trip circuit supervision with Resistor via –Q0-S1

The resistor to be looped in by the system provider in the current circuit is to be designed
depending upon the control voltage and the trip coil. There are two boundary conditions applicable
for the determination of the resistor value which limits the permissible range:

· With closed –Q0-S1A and closed –K901 the current flowing through the resistor may not lead
to the energization of the trip coil: Thus following applies:

(
R min = UaU-Ucoilcoilmax
(max)
)· Rcoil (1)

Ua Control voltage
Ucoil(max) maximum permissible voltage across the coil (usually 10% of the nominal voltage)
Rcoil ohmic resistance of the trip coil

· With closed –Q0-S1A and opened –K901 the minimum voltage across the binary input and the
minimum current should be achieved to energize the trip coil:

Px30/DE AS Aa 9 / 13
MiCOM Px30
Trip Circuit Supervision

(
R max = UaI-BIU(min)
BI (min)
- Rcoil ) (2)

UBI(min) minimum control voltage of the binary input (= 16V for Px30)
IBI(min) Current at switching threshold of the binary input (= 36mA for Px30)
Rcoil ohmic resistance of the trip coil

· The optimum resistance value corresponds the arithmatic mean value from Rmin and Rmax:

(
R = R min + R max
2
) (3)

The resistance value should be taken from Standards E12 (±10%) or E24 (±5%).

Note: In case if the calculation yields Rmin > Rmax , this procedure for the trip circuit supervision
is then not applicable!

· For determining the power consumption of the resistor R the following equation applies:

PR = (R +UR )2 · R
a
coil
(4)

Note: While determining the power consumption it was presumed that the current of the
switching threshold (IBI(min)) flows continuously through the resistor R. This could for instance
occur during a latched trip command (continuous current flow) and a control voltage of 48V
(high current consumption) . Therefore a matching of the power consumption is possible only
by taking into consideration the plant conditions.

· Example:

Ua 60V
Ucoil(max) 6V
Rcoil 23W

R min = æç 60V - 6V ö÷ · 23W = 207W

è 6V ø

R max = æç 60V - 16V ö - 23W » 1199W

÷
è 0,036 A ø

(
R = 207W + 1199W = 703W
2
)
Next standard value (E24): R = 680W

PR = (680W60+V23W )2 · 680W ³ 5W
Note:The calculation should be carried out additionally for the maximum and minimum
permissible control voltage („worst case“ calculation) , since this yields different resistance
values. Usually it is sufficient to determine Rmin for the maximum control voltage and Rmax for
the minimum control voltage and to use these values for the determination of R.

MiCOM Px30

2.2.2 Trip circuit supervision with resistor connected with CB-Trip

With certain resistances of the coils the condition Rmin > Rmax from 2.2.1 cannot be fulfilled for
smaller control voltages. In this case the possibility exists to accomplish the supervision of the trip
circuit with a simplified circuit. The trip circuit in that case is then supervised only with closed
circuit-breaker.

· The resistance R and its power consumption result in this procedure directly from the
equations (5) and (6), since with the opened circuit breaker (OFF) only the resistor is in series
with the binary input:

R = UaI-BIU(min)

The supervision takes place with the logic functions in accordance with Figure 4. Likewise the
given reference in section 2.2.1 applies concerning the boundary conditions with latched trip
commands.
