Mechanics Review 2002

1. A plane starts from point A. It flies 20o south of east to city B, 200 miles away. Then he flies to city C
that is 30o west of south, 175 miles away. Then the place travels on to city D which is 180 miles due west.
Find the location of city D relative to point A (starting point).

2. A baseball with, m=0.15 kg is thrown with a speed of 30m/s at an angle of 32 o above the horizontal.
Neglect air resistance.
a. What is its momentum at its maximum height?
b. What is its momentum just before it strikes the ground?

3. Frank and Susie are madly in love with each other, and they want to spend their one month anniversary
by ice skating as a couple. Unfortunately, none of them knew how to skate. After countless attempts,
Frank finally gave up and just stood in the middle of the ice rink. Susie saw this as a great opportunity to
do something romantic, so she pushed herself from the wall and hugged Frank as they collide. The couple
“stuck” together when they collided, and had a velocity of 6.0 m/s afterwards. Assume that friction is
negligible.
a. If Frank has twice the mass of Susie, calculate the velocity that Susie had before she collided
with Frank.
b. If the momentum after the collision is 36 kg-m/s, calculate each of their masses

4. Calculate the work required to have a 1500kg plane fly at a speed of 110 m/s at an elevation of 250 m.

5. Jill and Julie love to play on the seesaw. Julie, 50 kg, weighs much more than Jill, 35 kg. Both were
able to balance themselves evenly on the seesaw. If the center of mass is the midpoint of the seesaw, and
Jill is 2 m away from it; how far away is Julie from the center of mass?

6. A toy gun fires a bullet upward by a spring. The coefficient of the spring is 800 N/m; the mass of the
bullet is 25 g, the barrel of the gun is15 cm.
a. Find the muzzle velocity.
b. Find the greatest height that the ball reaches.

7. Two objects with mass m1 and m2 are at a distance of r apart. The gravitational force between them is
F1. If the masses are changed to 5ml and 3m2 and the distance is changed to 2r, what is the magnitude of
the new gravitational force?

8. A guy is pulling a really big rock by a rope at an angle. He is pulling with a force of 150N at an angle
of 37 o. The rock’s mass is 28kg. The coefficient of friction is .640. What is its acceleration?

9. A 60 kg man wants to swing on a rope attached to a tree over a lake that has a breaking strength of
10,000 N. If the man is pushed horizontally in a circle that has a radius of 2m, what is the maximum speed
the man can reach before the rope breaks?

10. A 200 N block is suspended by 3 cables. Find the tension in each cable.
11. Two blocks, block A weighs 3 kg and block B weighs 5 kg, are attracted to a frictionless, mass less
pullet. Compute the acceleration and the tension in the chord when they are released.

12. A skier starts from rest at the top of a hill inclined 20 degrees above the surface. The distance of the
slope is 500 m and the coefficient of kinetic friction between the skier and the surface is .2. What is the
skier’s speed at the bottom of the hill and how long does it take him to get their?

13. A 2000 kilogram car goes from rest to 45 m/s in 18 seconds. What is the average power (in watts) the
motor produced to cause acceleration.

Answers:
1. 235 miles @ 70 degrees south of west
2. 3.8 kg m/s in x direction, 4.5 kg m/s @ 32 degrees
3. 18 m/s, 2 kg and 4 kg
4. 1.275 x 107 J
5. 1.4 m
6. 6.88 m/s, 2.57 m
7. 15/4 F
8. .064 m/s2
9. 18.3 m/s or 17.7 m/s
10. 148 N, 79 N, 200 N
11. T=37.5 a=2.5 m/s2
12. 39 m/s, 25s
13. 1.125 x 105 watts
