An overview of the VPN
service, how the client
software is installed, and
how it can be used.

Definition of “VPN”
• Virtual Private Network.
– A private data network that makes use of the
public telecommunications infrastructure,
maintaining privacy through the use of a
tunneling protocol and data encryption.

Time limits of the VPN


• The VPN will automatically disconnect
after:
– ½ hour of inactivity.
– 2 hours regardless of usage. This is to
prevent users from “camping”.
• Re-establish the VPN connection to
continue working.

Installing the client software


• Download the Cisco VPN Client package.
– http://www.bus.umich.edu/Technology/Networ
k/RemoteAccess.htm
• Click on the “Download Instructions” link.
– Save the “VPNInstructions.ppt” file.
• Click on the “Download VPN Client for Windows”
link.
– Save the “CiscoVPN.msi” file.

Installing the client sofware
• Open the saved “VPNInstructions.ppt” file.
– Read it. Learn it. Love it.
And possibly print it.
• Run the “CiscoVPN.msi” file.
• Reboot if the installer doesn’t ask to.

Making a VPN connection


• Start ⇒ Programs ⇒ Cisco Systems
VPN Client ⇒ VPN Client.
– The Business School will be the only
connection listed.
– Click “Connect”.

• Log in.
– Enter your uniqname in the “Username:” box
and your Business School password in the
“Password:” box.
– Click OK.

• Make sure you are connected.
– In the system tray, down next to the clock on
the task bar, a yellow lock with a closed hasp
icon will appear.

I’m connected. Now what?


• Use Outlook as if you were in the office.
– Remote Outlook setup instructions:

• Connect to file server shares.
– The R:, S:, T:, and U: drives are just pointers
to file server shares.
– * The R: drive cannot be directly accessed
from non-domain systems. (Home machines)

Connect to a file server share


• Open Windows Explorer.
– Type the server name and share name in the
address bar and press ENTER.
• Ex: \\bus-user\FacStaff
– bus-user is the server name
– FacStaff is the share name.

Connect to a file server share
• Log in if prompted.
– Type without quotes “bus\uniqname” into the
“User name:” box substituting “uniqname” with
your uniqname.
– You MUST have “bus\” before your uniqname.

Connect to a file server share


• Log on if prompted, continued.
– Type your Business School password into the
“Password:” box.
– Click OK.

Disconnect from the VPN


• When done working, disconnect from the
VPN so others may use it.
– Right-click on the yellow lock with a closed
hasp icon in the system tray down next to the
clock on the task bar.

– Left-click on “Disconnect” in the pop-up menu.


• The hasp on the icon will flip to open.
