The Franklin Council on Aging is 40!

You are cordially invited to celebrate the splendid occasion of the Franklin Council on Aging’s 40th
Anniversary! We hope you’ll join us for a commemoration of the Council’s accomplishments and a look
to the future of the Franklin Senior Center. Refreshments will be served.
Date/Time: Friday, April 8, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

“The Health Care Proxy: Making Choices About Your Health Care” will be presented on Wednesday,
April 13, at 11:00 a.m. by Wellness Nurse, Linda Hastings. Without this in place, your loved ones
cannot be given information about your medical condition. Linda will review the process, provide the
forms, and offer information about Five Wishes which is a legal document that helps adults express how
they want to be cared for in case they become seriously ill and can’t speak for themselves. Call to sign
up for this informative session.

The AARP Driver Safety Class will be offered on Tuesday, May 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This is
the largest refresher course for older drivers and has helped millions of drivers remain safe on today’s
roads. It is designed to help tune up driving skills and update knowledge of the rules of the road. Age-
related physical changes will be reviewed with recommendations on how to adjust your driving to address
these changes. The class is $14 per person, $12 for AARP members. Come by the Center to sign up.

TRIAD and the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office is hosting a Senior Barbecue on Friday, June 3, at
11:00 a.m. Learn more about TRIAD and enjoy a delicious luncheon. Please call to sign up for this free
event.

Do you care for a loved one who is frail or socially isolated or suffers from low vision or
dementia? If so, come by to visit The Sunshine Club at the Senior Center. This is a place where frail
elders can receive individual attention and enjoy the company of others. Fun activities, lively discussions
and gentle exercise make for a stimulating day. To learn more about the program or arrange for a visit,
call us at 520-4945 for more information. We also host a Caregiver Support Group on the third
Wednesday of the month at 4:00 p.m. All caregivers are welcome to attend. (Participation in the
Supportive Day Program is not required.) This program is supported through a generous grant from the
Executive Office of Elder Affairs.
TRANSPORTATION:
 Door to door Dial-a-Ride service is available to senior citizens and disabled residents. Call
Kiessling Transit at 1-800-698-7676. Select Option #2, Dial-a-Ride.
 Transportation to long-distance medical appointments is available through GATRA by
calling Miles for Health at 1-800-585-8294. Appointments in Boston must be made on Monday,
Tuesday, Thursday or Friday, between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. For medical appointments in
other long-distance destinations, such as Burlington, Framingham, Newton, Wellesley or
Worcester, appointments must be made for Wednesdays. Reservations are taken Monday
through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and 48 hours notice is required. A donation of $10 is
requested for each trip.

 To arrange for Meals on Wheels, contact Tri Valley Elder Services at (800) 286-6640.
 The Common Grounds Café at the Senior Center offers affordable breakfast and lunch for
seniors. We serve a full breakfast for just $2, with breakfast meat $1 extra. Lunch offers
affordably priced soups, salads, sandwiches and more. Join us!

OUTREACH:
Free Cell Phone & Monthly Service is available to eligible households. Safelink Wireless provides a
free wireless phone and free minutes each month to qualified households under a government funded
assistance program. If you receive food stamps, fuel assistance, Medicaid, Supplemental Security
Income (SSI), or Federal Public Housing Assistance/Section 8, you may be eligible. You may be eligible
if your total household income is below $14,040 per year for one person; $18,900 per year for a two-
person household, and $23,760 for a three-person household.

What is the purpose of the waste bans?

Waste bans are prohibitions on the disposal and transfer for disposal of certain toxic

visual display in televisions, computer monitors and certain scientific instruments such
as oscilloscopes.

Glass Containers: glass bottles and jars (soda-lime glass) but not light bulbs, Pyrex
cookware, plate glass, drinking glasses, windows, windshields and ceramics.

Leaves: deciduous and coniferous leaf deposition.

Metal: Ferrous and non-ferrous metals from used appliances, building materials,
industrial equipment, vehicles, and manufacturing processes.

Correct Cart Placement: Please make sure the handles of the cart are facing away from the
street. Instructions are on the cart top.

Recycling Center at 455 Beaver St. Summer Schedule: Beginning April 5th, the Recycling Center
will be open Tuesdays 12-3. Your current sticker expires 6/30/11, new resident stickers are available
starting June 1 from the gate attendant.

Official Trash Overflow Bags Available: If you have additional trash that does not fit in your cart,
35 gallon bags are available at the DPW office—257 Fisher St. Cost is $15 for 5. Put the orange bag(s)
next to your trash cart on your trash day and they will be picked up. Only official Franklin overflow
bags will be picked up.

Maximize Your Recycling: Every bit helps, reducing trash reduces your cost. Make it a habit to find
another item that can be recycled and not put in the trash cart. Non foil wrapping paper can be recycled.

Large Plastic Recycling at Beaver Street Facility: There is a container for you to take your clean
rigid plastic. This includes—Little Tikes outdoor play equipment, Plastic toys, clean trash barrels,
recycling bins and more. Clean out for the Spring today! Remove any non-plastic parts—no trash.

Got Rusting Junk in the Yard?: Old motorcycles, bicycles, lawn mowers, snow blowers, etc.

Registration Information
Walk-In Registration for Spring Programs will begin on Monday, February 7th at 8:30 am at the Old Town Hall,
Except for Boston Red Sox tickets, March 7th
In an effort to alleviate the heavy rush of registrations, we will open ONLINE registration through our website as well. ON programs
where registration fills up quickly, we will permit ½ of the spots to be reserved online. Please go to our website
http://www.franklin.ma.us/recreation
Please click on “Program Registration” and look for the link “ONLINE REGISTRATION” where you will be directed to a secure
site. You can enter your information (Name, address, phone, email) as well as credit card information. You will receive a
confirmation email if your transaction was processed correctly. Please know that you will not receive any other contact and expect
you to know the full details of each program.
Recreation Department Policies:
All programs are offered to Franklin Residents on a first come, first serve basis. Franklin Recreation reserves the right to cancel or consolidate any
program that does not meet the minimum participant registration numbers. Remember nothing terminates a program faster than waiting until the last
minute to register. Avoid disappointment and register promptly. Please check to make sure the program has met the minimum participant requirement
if you have any questions.
Participants Responsibility:
We ask all participants to respect the staff, volunteers, coaches, other participants, age requirements, and the equipment we use. Additional rules will
be announced at each program. If a participant fails to cooperate with the rules, the Director reserves the right to dismiss or suspend a participant in any
program without a refund or fees returned.
Franklin Recreation is not a day care, after-school care program or babysitting service. Please read and understand the policies. If they are unclear to
you, please ask questions. All participants must pre-register and sign a waiver for ALL programs. The program coordinator on duty is solely
responsible for the activities taking place. Children should not be left unattended in the building or at the fields at any time. Please be on time dropping
off and picking up children from their programs. Failure to do so will result in additional cost, penalties or suspension from programming.
Registration:
Registration for programs will be during the regular operating hours listed in the seasonal brochure that is sent to each Franklin household.
Registrations will be accepted until the program is full or 1 week prior to the start date. In some cases, registration will be accepted up till the start of
the program. You may register for a program at the Old Town Hall 150 Emmons Street, Monday-Friday. We now accept mail in registration by
printing off a copy of our waiver form, and sending a check with the registrant’s information. All Franklin residents will be given first opportunity to
sign up for a program. If a particular program sells out quickly, non-residents may not be allowed to register. Included on our website in the “Program
Registration” area is the mail in registration forms which can be U.S. mailed into our office.
Non-Residents:
Non-Residents can register for programs for an additional fee pending space available. You must fill out a registration form during the registration
times in order to be placed on a waiting list. Program fee plus an additional non-resident fee will be collected prior to the start of the program should
space allow. I.e: Season swim pass: Resident $75, non-resident $125
Payment:
Payment is due at the time of registration, check or money order made payable to Town of Franklin. A fee of $35 will be charged for any check
returned for insufficient funds. Failure to pay at the time of registration will result in a “FREEZE” on your account. No new registration or
programming will be allowed until the $35 fee is paid.
Course Confirmation:
No confirmations are sent out!!!!! Please understand that it is the registrant’s responsibility to know the date, time, and location of any program. A
participant is registered only when payment is received, unless the department notifies you otherwise. We will only notify you if there are any
problems or changes.
Weather Cancellations:
When the Franklin School Department cancels school because of emergencies or weather conditions; all Recreation Department programming will be
cancelled for the entire day. If a storm develops later in the day, please call the Recreation Department’s weather line, 520-4909 ext. 2, or visit our
website at www.franklin.ma.us/recreation and go to News, Cancellations, and Upcoming events for an update.
Switching Programs:
If space allows and you wish to switch to another program, we will be happy to switch you to that program. However, receipt numbers and participant
information must be presented in person at the Recreation office.
Refund Policy:
All programs are refundable within 7 days before the program starts, unless the Recreation Department cancels a program, or you have
mailed in a registration and no openings exist. You may request to withdraw from a program in sufficient time (7 days prior), pending that a
replacement can be found and no costs have been incurred by the Recreation Department.
Special Needs:
Children and adults with special needs are encouraged to participate in recreation programs. Staff members are sensitive to your needs and will do
everything possible to assist you. If you are interested in participating in a program, but are not sure about the facility, transportation, or wish to discuss
program details, please call the Director of Recreation and ADA Coordinator, Ryan Jette to ask about specifics. The Town of Franklin is working
toward bringing all facilities into compliance with ADA guidelines. For a copy of our ADA Self Evaluation and Transition Plan, please see Ryan Jette
(Director of Recreation & ADA Coordinator).
Dog Ordinance:
In order to keep our parks clean and enjoyable for everyone, please remember if you are a dog owner to keep your dog on a leash and to clean up after
your pet. It’s the law in Franklin. The Recreation Department is currently working on the plans for a dog park in town, until then, please respect our
field users and leash your pets.
Inability to Pay:
It is the policy of the Recreation Department that no resident of the Town shall be refused participation in a program or the use of facilities because of
inability to pay. Confidential applications can be made to the Director of Recreation, and if a hardship exists, the applicant may be granted a reduction
in fee at the discretion of the Director. Please contact Ryan Jette in writing and include a copy of your most current 1040 tax form or a copy of a public
assistance record. Report ALL household income!
Field & Facility Use:
To use a field or facility, you must fill out a facility use form at the Recreation Department or print one off our website and mail it in. All users must
adhere to our field & facility use policies and furnish liability insurance coverage for the Town of Franklin. Permits will be issued prior to date of use.

Pee Wee Baseball
This introductory league is designed to teach children 4-6 years old the fundamentals of baseball & softball in a fun, non-
competitive environment. This league will get kids ready for the Franklin Youth Baseball Rookie league or Franklin Girls
Softball Assoc. by concentrating on hitting, base running, throwing, and fielding through timed stations and controlled
games. Limited to 80 kids per session. Instructor: Mike Masseur. This class will sell out quickly and cannot accept more
than 80 kids per session. All players receive a team shirt and baseball hat. Cleats and baseball pants are not required. 1.5
hours/week. NEW: 6 year old rotating schedule on Saturdays and Tuesdays, check website for description of program.
Parade for all Pee Wee Baseball players will be held April 23 Saturday, meet b/w 9:00-10:00am, at Davis Thayer School.

NHL Street Hockey


We’re bringing back one of our most popular programs of years past. NHL street hockey gives kids a chance to practice
hockey without the expense of purchasing nets, balls, sticks, goalie gear, etc. We’ll provide everything for a fun packed
league, along with safety goggles and mouthpieces. Tom Gately and David Marchand will be the instructors. Ages 6-14

Track & Field


Franklin Recreation is offering an outdoor track & field program for children ages 7-14 years old. Practices will be held at
the Franklin High School Track with some meets out of town. Transportation may be provided via bus to away events.
Lauren Taranto and Mike Masseur will organize and run meets and practices. Runners of all abilities can participate.
Runners can take part in the 4th of July Road Race on Saturday, July 2nd at 10:00 a.m. at the Town Common. Track & Field
shirts will be provided as part of the program. No practice on Memorial Day May 31st.

Spring Basketball
Boys & girls, grades 3-8 can join our Sunday Spring Basketball League. This spring league will play half indoor, half
outdoor games. League Coordinator Jim Edgehill will place the players on a team, and four teams will be established in each
division. Games are played at Remington Jefferson indoor/outdoor courts. During inclement weather, both games will be
played indoor. This is a fun league designed to keep the kids playing basketball throughout the spring & summer months.

Youth Golf Lessons
Try our popular group golf lessons with head golf professional Mark Copithorne at the New England Country Club. These

Girls On The Run


This experiential learning program for 3rd-8th graders combines self esteem enhancing, uplifting warm ups and workouts
that encourage emotional, social, mental, spiritual, and physical development. Girls will train for 8 weeks, while taking part
in team building activities. This is not an exclusive track program, although running will be the emphasis. The instructor of
this program is Joanne Laliberte. This program will be held at Franklin High School track and fills up quickly!

Run For Your Life


The purpose of this program is to help participants maintain a positive attitude toward accomplishments, avoid injuries and
ENJOY THE SPORT OF RUNNING! This is a non competitive, “set our own goals” program. We will focus on important
aspects of running such as warm-up and cool down; why, how and when to stretch; proper running form; pace setting;
keeping a log/journal rest and recovery; and good nutritional habits including hydration. Bring a water bottle. Grades: 3-6

Peter Cottontail’s EGGcellent Adventure


Experience the largest egg hunt in the area with Peter Cottontail. Peter & his friends will entertain kids with egg painting,

Franklin Recreation teams up with Medway Parks Commission to bring non-contact flag football to Medway and Franklin

Pepsi® Pitch, Hit & Run Baseball Skills


Major League Baseball & the Franklin Recreation Department are giving kids a chance to showcase their baseball abilities.
This competition allows kids to display three baseball skills; hitting, pitching, and base running. Winners in each age
category will advance on to the sectional competition and possibly end up at Fenway Park at a Red Sox Game. Open to all
children ages 7-14.

Paintball Trip
Join the Recreation Department for an exciting day of Paintball adventure at Fox 4 in Upton. Players will be given a safety
orientation and issued all needed equipment. The bus will depart from the Recreation Department at 9:00 a.m. and will

3D Lego Engineering
New program to our Lego Engineering series. No amount of “huffing and puffing” will blow our buildings down!
Understanding and visualizing dimension is the cornerstone of engineering, architecture, and building. In this hands-on
LEGO® class, students learn principles of construction and use math skills as we experiment with scale and size, symmetry
and reflection. Most of all, we will have a lot of fun.

DINO DIG (Dinosaur Discovery)


Come join this exciting discovery class! Beginning paleontologists learn about dinosaurs and the techniques used in
extracting fossils in this hands-on class. Go on your own fossil dig, analyze and assemble skeleton pieces, produce a fossil
reconstruction, create a mural. On the last day of class, we will share our documentary with family and friends at a private
viewing.

Kid Care Babysitting Class
This introductory babysitting class allows potential sitters the opportunity to learn about the business of babysitting, hours of

Tumbling Two’s
This is a play-based class, which focuses on moving your body. A different obstacle course is set up each week with a

Jumping Gymnastics
Each week a new obstacle course will be created to help children develop coordination, balance, strength, and flexibility.

Rocket Space Camp


In this class students will learn about rockets, how they work and how they fly. Then they will build and launch their own

yourself hairstyles using a blow dryer, curling iron, and flat iron, without damaging your hair. Students will also be taught
the latest most popular hairstyles such as updo's, braids, twists, fish tails, the new ponytail and many more! You will also
learn how to care and protect your skin and how to apply age appropriate make-up efficiently. Lastly, learn how to give
yourself a professional manicure ad how to give yourself the most stylish nails. Every student will receive their very own

Do you have a 2-3 year old who wishes they could go to school? Let your preschooler enjoy some independence and
socialization with peers in this preschool curriculum based drop off class taught by two certified teachers. Each week we
will explore a different theme and have related activities such as stories, songs, finger plays, art activities, and games as well
as gross motor play. This 1 1/2 hour class is a great transitioning first step before preschool and longer drop off activities.
Snack is provided, however if your child has allergies we ask that you provide their snack. Also, please send a labeled sippy
cup for your child.

Ladies Light Hiking
Add dimension to your walking or jogging. Do you like the idea of hiking but don’t want to go alone? Hiking is fantastic
exercise as well as a great time to get some fresh air and explore new places. We will meet at various local locations every
week (a list will be given out). Our instructor, Nanci Cahalane is an AFFA certified personal trainer and fitness instructor.
This class moves at a good pace-we’ll be looking for hills!

Happy Tails-Dog Hike
Hike with your “best friend” this Spring! Join other dog owners in this new group exercise! Dogs, just like humans are
social beings. Regular play dates with other dogs are an important part of your dog’s well being. Let’s get together for
some fresh air and romp through the woods with your dog. Bring a leash, pick-up bags and water for your dog.

Boston Red Sox
Franklin Recreation has once again obtained tickets to the hottest show in the Boston area. Come see your 2007 World
Champion Boston Red Sox take on the Toronto Blue Jays on Marathon Monday. Tickets are sold in groups of 2 or 4 per
person only. NO individual tickets will be sold and tickets are non-refundable once purchased. Tickets will go on sale on
March 1st at 8:30am in the Recreation Department, 150 Emmons St.

CPR Training
The Franklin Recreation Department in conjunction with the American Heart Association has been providing quality CPR
training to Franklin residents for many years. Franklin Rec. and instructor certified Laura Atwood are teaming up to bring
CPR training to the Franklin community for all ages and professions. Whether for employment, school, babysitting, or just
an overall understanding of infant, child and adult CPR; this course is the course for you and your family. Certifications are
valid for 2 years after the completion of this course. Each participant will receive a certification card upon completion of
course.

Adult Golf Lessons
Adults can learn to play golf and shave strokes off their game with Golf Professional, Mark Copithorne at the New England
Country Club. Lessons will cover putting, chipping, bunkers, irons, and woods. Meet at the NECC pro shop.

Hatha Yoga
Yoga is an ancient approach to life and offers a complete health program which benefits every system in the body; muscular,
circulatory, nervous, immune. When approached as a non-competitive activity, Hatha yoga is an excellent vehicle for stress
management. The emphasis of this class will be to focus inward and work at your own ability to achieve your highest level
of health and happiness. All levels of experience are welcome. The classes are organized in 6 week sessions.
