What is 3G technology?
3G refers to the third generation of mobile telephony (that is, cellular) technology. The third
generation, as the name suggests, follows two earlier generations.

The first generation (1G) began in the early 80's with commercial deployment of Advanced
Mobile Phone Service (AMPS) cellular networks. The second generation (2G) emerged in the
90's when mobile operators deployed two competing digital voice standards.

3G or 3rd Generation, is a family of standards for mobile telecommunications defined by

the International Telecommunication Union,[1] which includes GSM EDGE, UMTS,
and CDMA2000 as well as DECT and WiMAX. Services include wide-area wireless
voice telephone, video calls, and wireless data, all in a mobile environment. Compared
to 2G and 2.5G services, 3G allows simultaneous use of speech and data services and higher
data rates (up to 14.0 Mbit/s on the downlink and 5.8 Mbit/s on the uplink withHSPA+).
Thus, 3G networks enable network operators to offer users a wider range of more advanced
services while achieving greater network capacity through improved spectral efficiency.

History
The first pre-commercial 3G network was launched by NTT DoCoMo in Japan
branded FOMA, in May 2001 on a pre-release of W-CDMA technology.[7] The first
commercial launch of 3G was also by NTT DoCoMo in Japan on 1 October 2001, although it
was initially somewhat limited in scope;[8][9] broader availability was delayed by apparent
concerns over reliability.[10] The second network to go commercially live was by SK
Telecom in South Korea on the 1xEV-DO technology in January 2002. By May 2002 the
second South Korean 3G network was by KT on EV-DO and thus the Koreans were the first
to see competition among 3G operators.

Application
The bandwidth and location information available to 3G devices gives rise to applications not
previously available to mobile phone users. Some of the applications are:

Mobile TV - a provider redirects a TV channel directly to the subscriber's phone where it

can be watched.
Video on demand - a provider sends a movie to the subscriber's phone.
Video conferencing - subscribers can see as well as talk to each other.
Tele-medicine - a medical provider monitors or provides advice to the potentially
isolated subscriber.
Location-based services - a provider sends localized weather or traffic conditions to the
phone, or the phone allows the subscriber to find nearby businesses or friends.

Mobile Interview
In today's global scenario, the 3G technology will enable organizations and qualified
candidates to have a telephonic interview in a modern way through video conferencing.
Traditional telephonic interview and personal interviews may be replaced by 3G voice and
video conferencing. This will reduce the cost and save the time of both the organizations and
the candidates.

Conferences
3G technology provides for video conferencing which can help the Human Resource
Department interact with their seniors at the time of urgency without wasting other resources.
This can be very much helpful when the concerned person is out of state or country.

File Transfer
With the advent of video and audio multimedia and a faster rate of downloading e-mail
attachments, employees in an organization can request any urgent file or report they need to
present to the clients. This will again reduce the burden on organization's resources and
increase employee effectiveness.

e-learning & m-learning

3G technology provides for internet browsing that will help the employees to surf and learn
using their 3G cell phones while travelling (m-learning) or from home. The organizations can
schedule training modules for the employees of other branches through video conferences.

Impact of technology
Speed is the alternative of life. With the high-rising technology innovation, communication
has become fast-paced and easier. And with the strong presence of 3G technology, growth in
wireless communication has become a commonality across the globe. 3G mobile phones are
the latest in the line to enable you to access faster global mobility.

3G system has made our lifestyle a lot more comfortable and exciting. 3G technology is
mainly supported by Wideband CDMA, which is even faster than GSM and GPRS. 3G
system works wonders for ardent users of mobile phones as its wide bandwidth provides
high-speed connectivity for data transmission. Due to high level broadband frequency, the
3G-enabled mobile phones are bound to deliver high-end performance. The benefits of 3G
are many. You can avail video streaming, email, Web browsing, and other mobile data
services. With 3G mobile phones, you can get access to unlimited entertainment by
downloading wallpapers, MP3 ring tones, current smash-hits, themes, exciting games, and
lots more. Be it camera, music, games, or your business solutions, 3G technology
accomplishes your multimedia comforts by catering to all your needs with fast pace and low
cost. The good news for mobile users is that now 3G has been uploaded in all the latest
handsets from the leading manufacturers including Sony Ericsson, Samsung, LG, Nokia and
Motorola.

Research and Development

The evolution of 2G, 3G, and 4G mobile telecommunications technologies has been
researched and written about ad infinitum. More recently, the topic of WiMAX, a particular
4G technology which promises to deliver The Impact of 3G & 4G Wireless Technology on
Carriers' Network Development Strategies, concludes that WiMAX will have a significant
role to play in the evolution of mobile networks. A survey of manufacturers and network
operators indicates that they are making plans to incorporate 4G technology as a value-adding
adjunct to existing mobile infrastructure and services.

'WiMAX has received a lot of negative publicity recently' says Julian Rawle, Managing
Partner, 'but when you look beyond the hype and anti-hype, there is a viable business case for
the fixed standard and maybe also for the mobile standard.'
70 Mb/s data speeds over a 50 km radius, has been the focus of much attention and hype.

Problems in 3G

• Attacks on the integrity of data exchange

• tapping into mailboxes or using telephone services at someone else’s expense
• electromagnetic pollution may be harmful to health
• telcos should communicate potential health risks and the counter-measures taken
• political intervention

• low acceptance and limited willingness to pay

• value-added mobile services failed
• besides ringtones, games, gambling

Future Development
A major strength of 3 is an emphasis on anticipating and meeting customers' needs. The
company recognises that it can continue to be the market leader only if its product is superior
to that of its rivals. This will only be the case if 3 understands what its customers want.
In a fast-moving industry, it is important to find out what clients prefer today, but 3 must also
research their future requirements. It must also frequently research new technologies – in
this way it will stay at the forefront of the field and retain market leadership. 3G is a
developing technology and the greatest benefits are likely to come in the next couple of
years. Because of its market leadership, 3 is ideally placed to continue to lead developments
in 3G.

Conclusion
3G is an exciting new technology that is being incorporated into mobile devices across the
globe. Users are now able to make person-to-person calls, download data and do a variety of
other tasks they never imagined possible all via their 3G cell phones. 3G wireless technology
provides an exciting new development in the way people communicate with each other. It
enables us to use a much more comprehensive range of communication than previous forms.
Because of the greater bandwidth the new technology offers, there are tremendous benefits to
be gained by business and private users. Features such as high-speed internet connections and
the transmission of pictures and sound give users access to high-quality information wherever
they are.
