On the cOver: “rOMAneScO FAntAStIcO” BY MArtY KleIn
“Romanesco, arguably the most beautiful vegetable, is a broccoli / cauliflower hybrid dating back to sixteenth century Italy. It is also called
fractal broccoli. The complex design of the tightly packed florets is an example of phyllotaxis, the fractal patterning that appears in nature.
One common example of this patterning is the arrangement of the seeds in a sunflower. These romanescos were grown by Rick Tracy at
Intervale Farm in Westhampton, MA.” – Marty Klein
Shifting from photography to ‘scanography,’ Marty Klein composes images directly on a flatbed scanner, capturing plants and other
natural objects with incredible depth and contrast in one image. Marty Klein holds a BA and a Master of regional Planning from
the University of Massachusetts, and over the years has worked as an artist, photographer, blacksmith, and land protection activist.
he was recently honored with an exhibit at the Arnold Arboretum of harvard University.

concepts. through lectures and in-class exercises, students
explore techniques in both black-and-white and color media.
Specific areas covered include site analysis and graphic

freehand perspective drawing. Students examine a number of
methods that enable designers to apply these techniques to
their work quickly and effectively. this workshop is recom-
