Mark Scheme
2009 examination – June series
Mark schemes are prepared by the Principal Examiner and considered, together with the
relevant questions, by a panel of subject teachers. This mark scheme includes any
amendments made at the standardisation meeting attended by all examiners and is the scheme
which was used by them in this examination. The standardisation meeting ensures that the
mark scheme covers the candidates’ responses to questions and that every examiner
understands and applies it in the same correct way. As preparation for the standardisation
meeting each examiner analyses a number of candidates’ scripts: alternative answers not
already covered by the mark scheme are discussed at the meeting and legislated for. If, after
this meeting, examiners encounter unusual answers which have not been discussed at the
meeting they are required to refer these to the Principal Examiner.

It must be stressed that a mark scheme is a working document, in many cases further
developed and expanded on the basis of candidates’ reactions to a particular paper.
Assumptions about future mark schemes on the basis of one year’s document should be
avoided; whilst the guiding principles of assessment remain constant, details will change,
depending on the content of a particular examination paper.

Further copies of this Mark Scheme are available to download from the AQA Website: www.aqa.org.uk

Do not accept unqualified reference to cloudy
Ignore references to precipitate etc 2

(b) (i) Glycerol; 1

(ii) Has a phosphate/ (only) two fatty acids/hydrocarbon tails; 1

Unqualified references refer to the phospholipids shown in the diagram

(iii) H-C-H

H-C-H
l
H-C-H
l
H

/ CH2CH2CH3 ; 1

(iv) Z/tails/Hydrophobic/hate water/non-polar;

Question 5

(a) (i) Less at A/ more at B; 1

Accept inspiration and expiration as equivalent to A and B

(ii) Carbon dioxide diffuses/passes/ into alveoli/from blood;

As higher concentration in blood/low concentration in alveolus; 2
(First mark for site and direction, second for cause)

(b) (i) Contract;

Ribs move upwards/out;
Increasing volume/decreasing pressure in chest/thorax/lungs; 3

(ii) Intercostal muscles relax; 1

(If you can ignore reference to internal contracting, do so)

Total 7

Question 6

(a) Does not have the resolution / cannot distinguish between points this close together;
As light has longer wavelength/lower frequency; 2
The key ideas in marking this part of the question are resolution and wavelength

(b) Lipid soluble / small / non-polar / not charged; 1

(c) (i) Concentration of sodium ions (outside cell);

As concentration/independent variable increases so does the rate
of diffusion; 2

(ii) Sodium ions are passing through the channels/pores;

(ii) C12; H22 O11; 2

(b) (i) Facilitated diffusion is movement from high to low concentration / down
concentration gradient;
Reject ‘across’ / ‘along’ concentration gradient
Facilitated diffusion does not require energy / ATP / is passive; 2

(ii) Produces greater water potential gradient / lower / more negative water potential
in cells / less negative / higher water potential in intestine;
Water moves (into cells) by osmosis / diffusion; 2
