TASK: Backfilling to Retaining Walls

LOCATION: All Buildings

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKS:

Sealing Wall.
Placing RIW and protective boarding.
Install Land drain.
Backfilling with type 6P material.
Testing of Backfilling.

METHOD OF HOW THE WORKS IS TO BE CARRIED OUT:

Sealing Wall

All holes used for shuttering will be filled using Setplug fast setting plugging
compound. Any remedial or rubbing up of the wall will be done and completed at this
stage.

Placing RIW and protective boarding to back of wall

The concrete surface will be swept clean of any debris or dust. A sand cement fillet
will be used between the base and the wall to fill the corner.

Two coats of RIW LAC will be applied using brushes and rollers up to a 2 Metre
height. The angle strip and protective boarding will then be placed against the RIW.

Two coats of RIW and the protective boarding to the top of the wall will be placed
once the backfilling is completed to the 2 Metre height.

Install Land Drain

Terram matting will be placed onto and against the retaining wall protective boarding.
A 150mm diameter plastic land drain will be placed onto the terram and A10 pipe
bedding placed around the land drain. The terram will be wrapped around the

Backfilling with 6P imported material

Before any backfilling can commence the concrete test results for the retaining wall
must be received and the retaining wall has reached the required strength. No
backfill can commence unless a permit to backfill as been given. Then 6P material
will be placed onto the protective board on top of the retaining wall base with an
excavator from the top of bank above the retaining wall. This will be laid in 110mm
layers and compacted using a Bomag 851 vibratory Tamping Roller. Eight number
passes will be required on the 110mm 6P material.(Earthworks Specification Table
6/4 Method 6 using vibratory roller over 700kg-1300kg 110mm depth states 16
passes. Bomag 851 states 910kg/per metre width. It is a double drum roller therefore
8 passes required.) Once the 110mm layer has had the required number of passes
another 110mm layer, levelled and rolled. This process will carry on until the retaining
wall is backfilled up to height of 1 metre from the top of the wall. The sequence will
be repeated on completion of structural steelwork that is installed within the R.C.
wall. The 6P material will be installed up to the underside of MOT Type 1 Clause 803
as indicated on the engineer’s drawings.

Testing of backfilling

Sand replacement/NDT test will be carried out at three different postions and at three
different. All postions of testing will be decided by Caddick Construction.
