List of Modals Facts about Modals


Should 1. Modals are different from others verbs because they don´t have an -s,
-ed, or –ing ending.
Must
E.g. The professor can compare prices in the supermarket. NOT: She cans
Have to / Has to
Could 2. Modals are different from other verbs because we don´t use an infinitive after a modal
May (exception: ought to. Ought to means should). We use the base form.
Can E.g. My friend can compare the professors.
Except: My friend ought to compare the professors.
They have to compare their cell phone.

3. To form the negative, put not after the modal.


E.g. You should not spend much time to play games in Internet.

4. Some verbs are like modals in meaning: have to = must


E.g. You must practice English out to the school classes = You have to practice English out to
the school.

Must not and cannot are very close in meaning.
