N THE SUMMER OF 1958, Elvis was king. Gas was 25 cents a gallon. The average cost
of a new house was around $13,000. And Maytag entered the commercial laundry
market with Model 123CM, a specialized application of the company’s wildly popular
domestic washer designed to maintain the highest quality in engineering, workmanship,
material and performance. The following is an abbreviated history of Maytag Commercial
Laundry and the remarkable success we have experienced during the past 50 years.

The Spirit of Maytag
“In all business, there is a factor which cannot be compensated
for in dollars and cents or computed by any measure…it is
represented only by the spirit of love which the true craftsman
holds for his job and the things he is trying to accomplish.”
