 Celebrating 50 Years of Dependability

N THE SUMMER OF 1958, Elvis was king. Gas was 25 cents a gallon. The average cost
of a new house was around $13,000. And Maytag entered the commercial laundry
market with Model 123CM, a specialized application of the company’s wildly popular
domestic washer designed to maintain the highest quality in engineering, workmanship,
material and performance. The following is an abbreviated history of Maytag Commercial
Laundry and the remarkable success we have experienced during the past 50 years.

1958
To serve the growing needs of a mobile
population, Maytag organized a network of
commercial laundry distributors to provide
dependable sales and service to both self-
serve laundries and apartment buildings.
1962
Maytag introduced washers and
dryers activated by plastic tickets to
the commercial laundry industry. This
introduction represented the first major
design change since coin meters were
affixed to washing machines in the 1930s.
1963
To set a higher standard, Maytag
introduced Highlander Center™ concept
stores. These distinctive stores were built to
standards embodying the Scottish spirit of
economy with craftsmanship.
1969
In this year, Maytag was the first to bring
to market the Dial-a-Fabric™ commercial
washer. This design made it possible to set
a complete and correct wash cycle with a
single control.
1973
Responding to market needs, Maytag
introduced a large capacity commercial
dryer to both coin laundry stores and
on-premise laundry facilities like nursing
homes and hospitals.
1975
Maytag introduced the single-load
stacked dryer to the commercial laundry
marketplace. This new product offered
coin store owners a number of advantages
like space savings, gas savings and offered
a wider choice of settings for handling
washable apparel. Maytag also introduced
updated concept stores named Maytag-
equipped Home Style Laundry Centers™
this year.
1977
Maytag responded to the needs of the
inflation-ridden marketplace by introducing
washers and dryers that featured variable-
price coin slides. These machines made
pricing adjustments easy to do at little cost.
1987
Maytag introduced front-load washers
to provide the commercial laundry
marketplace with equipment that could
handle larger loads.
1988
Maytag introduced another industry first
with its customer-friendly Computer
Trac® washers and dryers. They offered
features like coin-countdown, special
pricing and time-remaining in cycle. In this
year, Maytag also introduced the Maytag-
equipped Just Like Home™ store concept.
1992
Taking technology one step further,
Maytag introduced the industry’s first
accountability system with its Accu Trac™
system. This electronic auditing system,
offered on both washers and dryers,
provided apartment operators with the
ability to make sure they received a fair
share of all money collected in their
laundry rooms.
1997
Maytag took the industry by storm with
the introduction of a new high-efficiency
horizontal-axis commercial washer that
used significantly less water and energy
than traditional top-load models.
2000
In this year, Maytag introduced a
chemical injection kit that enabled hotels,
restaurants, health care and institutional
users to automatically add measured
amounts of detergent to the wash load.
2003
Responding to increasing utility costs,
Maytag launched a new line of ENERGY
STAR®-qualified top-load washers. The
company also began offering an industry-
exclusive 5-year parts warranty on select
coin-operated equipment.
2006
In March 2006, Maytag was acquired
by Whirlpool Corporation. Soon after,
Whirlpool CEO Jeff Fettig announced
plans to maintain and expand Maytag’s
leadership position in the commercial
laundry segment.
2007
During this year, Maytag introduced the
Speed Zone™ concept, where customers
can complete their laundry quickly and
efficiently.
2008
Maytag continues to offer more energy-
saving solutions than any other brand.
Maytag Energy Advantage™ equipment
continues to remain on the cutting edge
of design and performance for coin
laundry, multi-housing and on-premises
applications.

The theme of the 50th Annual Commercial Laundry Sales Meeting, held at The Phoenician
Resort in Scottsdale, was “A Bright Past, A Brilliant Future.” Highlights of the meeting included:

washers and dryers engineered for the coin laundry, multi-housing and on-premises market
segments.
• An inside look at new advertising/marketing initiatives designed to ensure Maytag and

decrease utility costs and enhance profits.
• The privilege of recognizing top-performing Maytag and Whirlpool trade partners for their
extraordinary successes during the past year.
