Wee Knitted Bird

This pattern will be easier to follow if you are an Intermediate knitter. It will seem difficult if
you are a beginner. Knitting this bird involves knitting using double point needles and
employing the following techniques: M1 (make one) which is a type of increase, K 2 tog
(knit two together ) to make decreases and working the double knitting pattern (which is
basically knitting in the round only using two double point needles. You will also be using a
Crochet hook size G or C to make the birdie’s toes. I have used sport weight yarn in pink
for the bird, and light brown for the feet and beak, black yarn for the eyes. You will also need
a set of four double point knitting needles in size 5[3.75 mm] and a yarn needle to hide
the tails.

Some abbreviations used:

The Beak – Using the crochet hook pick up one
stitch and chain 1. Work 1 single crochet in the same
stitch. Chain 3 and work 1 slip stitch in 2nd chain
from hook, work two more slip stitches. The last slip
stitch is worked on the beginning single crochet.
Hide the tails. Make two eyes on each side by
making two French knots using dark yarn. If you
want to make a crest for your birdie, simply use a
crochet hook to attach two strands of yarn.

Feet – Make two – The feet are made by making an I – Cord consisting of two
stitches. Work until the I cord measures 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 inches long. You will then need to
use a crochet hook size C or G to make the birdie’s toes. I made three. Some birds actually
do only have three toes. Place a stitch holder on one of the stitches and insert the crochet
hook on the other stitch. Each toe consists of three chains: Do this: Chain 3, slip stitch in
the second chain from the hook, slip the next stitch and connect to the I cord by slipping
one more stitch. Chain three to make the middle toe and work as above. Always finish the
last crochet stitch by slipping a stitch in the I Cord. To make the last toe, slip a stitch into the
last loop and repeat the process by chaining three. Work at it and don’t forget Birdies feet
are not perfect. Attach the feet to the bottom of the bird.

Wings – Make two

The wings are knitted using the double Knitting
technique.
Work all rows this way: CO 8 sts *[K1, yf, slip 1, yb] Rep
from * to the end.

Work using this pattern until you have around ¾ of an inch. You are actually knitting in
the round by using only two needles. At the end you will have completed 5 rounds. Each
round begins at the tail and ends at the tail.

1 - Finished Wing

Here’s a You Tube Video which illustrates this

technique:

After completing the 5 rounds, separate the stitches evenly using two double point needles.
You should have an equal amount on each needle. Now you will continue knitting in the
round the traditional way and finish the wing by knitting each stitch together. You will have
four stitches left. Cut the yarn and thread the tail through the remaining four stitches. Hide
the tail inside the wing. Sew the wing to each side of the birdie.

Note: Please have lots of fun making this bird and many more but please do not sell this
