noise generated by the mechanical installations under normal operating mode.

2.9.1.2 The accumulative noise level of all individual noise sources shall have a combined
noise rating not greater than the specified Noise Ratings and the selection of sound
attenuation equipment shall have insertion losses selected at least 4 dB greater than
that required to take into account the accumulative effect of noise sources.

2.9.1.3 The manufacture and installation of all acoustic materials shall comply with Control
of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations.

2.9.1.4 Sound attenuators shall be located immediately before penetration of plant room
enclosures wherever possible but where this is not, the ductwork between the sound
attenuator and wall, floor or ceiling enclosure shall have external cladding installed
to prevent noise infiltration into or out of the air distribution ductwork.

2.9.1.5 Noise Rating Levels specified shall be achieved with all engineering services
functioning in their most noise productive mode.

2.9.1.6 All engineering services equipment in plant room areas shall be selected such that
the maximum allowable noise level is not exceeded further than 1m from the
equipment. Where equipment is selected which exceeds the specified maximum
allowable noise level, suitable additional acoustic enclosures, with full ventilation,
anti-vibration protection and access facilities shall be provided to achieve the
plantroom background noise level. In plant rooms install resilient mounting supports
as detailed elsewhere.

2.9.1.7 Sound attenuators shall be installed to achieve the required specified Noise Rating
Levels. Where the insertion losses are stated they refer specifically to the fan sound
power levels also stated, and to the ductwork system indicated on the Drawings.
The Sub-Contractor shall check the performance of all sound attenuators specified
against the final Fabrication drawings and confirm that the noise levels will be
achieved or alternatively modify such insertion losses accordingly. If any of the
specification is revised which affect the-resultant noise level, or the Fabrication
drawings alter the ductwork layout or plantroorn layouts, then the Sub-Contractor
shall re-select the sound attenuators to achieve the specified noise rating levels.

2.9.2 SOUND ATTENUATORS

2.9.2.1 The installation of sound attenuators and other equipment shall limit the background
noise generated by the mechanical installations under normal operating mode.

2.9.2.2 Sound attenuators shall be either circular or rectangular and constructed from
galvanised steel sheets of thickness not less than 0.8mm for panels up to 1 metre,
1.2mm for panels between 1 metre and 1.5 metres and 1.6mm over 1.5 metres with
angle iron end flanges and drilled locating holes. The angle iron flanges shall be
painted with 2 coats of aluminum paint.

2.9.2.3 Additional flanges shall be provided if necessary for stiffening. Joints between the
galvanised steel sheets shall be locked formed and sealed with mastic. Casing
edges shall be turned over on to the flanged edges.

2.9.2.4 Sound attenuators shall be supported on 50mm x 50mm angle section framework
with resilient separating pads of neoprene impregnated cork.

BWL6156 Blue Quarter, Maidstone 11.07.08.

2.9.2.5 Sound attenuators mounted within masonry ducts shall be supported on 50mm x
50mm angle section framework, with separating pads, supported on the structural
concrete building elements but not touching the non load bearing infill constructional
elements.

2.9.2.6 Sound attenuators shall be airtight and shall be assembled into ductwork system
flanges using sealing gaskets.

2.9.2.7 Acoustic lining materials and splitters within silencers shall be inorganic, non
hygroscopic, vermin proof and fire resistant to BS 476 Part 1, Class 1. Linings shall
be protected to prevent "fibre fly" with a material whose effect on the attenuation
performance is known such as a 12 micron thick woven fibre mesh. On kitchen
extract, attenuators shall be additionally lined with a protective coating to permit
internal cleaning to remove grease. Grease shall not be allowed to penetrate the
acoustic lining. All linings and splitters shall be retained by perforated galvanised
steel sheet and shall have aerodynamically shaped leading and trailing edges.

2.9.2.8 Sound attenuators shall be selected to have the following pressure drops:

NR Required Max Pd kPa

20 0.035
25 0.035
30 0.0625
35 0.075
40 and above 0.1 unless specifically Approved.

2.9.2.9 Sound attenuator outer casings shall be primed with metal etching paint and finally
finished two coats of gloss paint to approved colour on uninsulated ductwork or
primed with metal etch paint and then insulated as the connecting ductwork.

2.9.2.10 Each attenuator shall be tested for both pressure drop and its dynamic insertion loss
in accordance with BS 4718.

2.9.3 ANTI-VIBRATION MOUNTINGS GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

2.9.3.1 The installation of sound attenuators and other equipment shall limit the background
noise generated by the mechanical installations under normal operating mode.

2.9.3.2 All rotating and reciprocating machinery shall be isolated from the building structure
with resilient mountings. These mountings shall be designed for a minimum isolating
efficiency of 95% in basement areas and ground floors where plant is supported on
a solid concrete slab isolated from the rest of the building in all roof level and other
located plant -rooms, mountings shall be selected for a minimum isolating efficiency
of 99%. Isolating efficiency shall be checked by the measurement of acceleration
above and below the mounts. Mountings shall be selected to isolate the lowest
forcing frequency of vibration and care shall be taken to ensure that the static
deflection of the supporting structure under the plant loading is taken into account.

2.9.3.3 Where numbers of resilient mountings are used to support any machine they shall
be selected to have equal deflection.

2.9.3.4 Resilient mountings shall be of the spring, rubber in sheer, rubber in compression,
