Stand Up Against Bullying

Tom had been complaining
about Johnny bothering him.

Bullying can take place
anywhere, at school, on-line,
even in the workplace. Bullying
can be physical, verbal, or
emotional and is intended to
be harmful towards others.
Bullying usually happens for an
extended period of time and is a
learned behavior. Many times,
the bullies get “rewarded” by
their peers. In the classroom,
if a teacher does nothing about
bullying, then the bully sees his
action as being acceptable. If
bullies do not learn that their
behavior is wrong, they are
likely to end up in prison.
What should be done if a
child is a victim of bullying?
Experts say to ignore the
situation or try to avoid the
bully. It is hard to ignore
someone hitting you ever time
he walks past or says mean
things to you under their breath.

Children need a strong
support system at home and at
school. Children need to have an
adult, like a parent, grandparent,
coach, or school personnel that
they feel comfortable talking

necessary, contact the teacher
or the school and be sure to
have written information about
what is happening to the child.
If Tom had not felt comfortable
talking to his mother, he may
still be a victim of bullying.
It is also important for
students to stand up against
bullies. Usually, just another
peer standing up for the victim
is enough to stop the bullying.
When the victim stands up
for himself, many times the
bullying will stop because the
bully is looking for a weak
person.
Cyberbullying has
also become a problem.
Cyberbullying is where the
internet, cell phone, or other
electronic devices are used to
send or post hurtful information
about another. Many times just
changing e-mail and phone
numbers, or avoiding certain
chat rooms is enough. Once
again, a peer standing up
for another in a chat room is
sometimes all it takes to stop
the bullying.
Many times bullying is done
when a person is different. If
someone does not have just
the right clothes or the correct
hairstyle, others can be mean
and begin to bully. When
students have the opportunity
to go beyond the looks and
learn to know the person, the
bullying usually stops. The
more students get to know each
other, the less likely they are to
bully.
One activity that has been
used in schools is the bucket
drop. On a sheet of paper,
each student has to write at
least one positive thing about
every person in the classroom.
Then the papers are dropped in
to each child’s bucket. This is
positive for the students, and it
helps students get to know each
other better.
Although there is no
one solution for bullying,
it is important that parents
and schools provide a safe
environment for children. Give
the students the opportunity to
interact and get to know each
other. Help people to care
about one other and be willing
to stand up against bullies.

In 1978, I asked Urban
Berning, Maria Stein
Postmaster, to write about
the history of the Maria
Stein Post Office for the
1978 Mercer County
History Book (page 768).
He recalled that, at one time,
the Post Office was located
in a corner of what was
Heinl’s Grocery in 1978.
Henry Leugers had a 1945
photograph of the Urban
Menker Grocery Store and
Post Office in his “Pictorial
History and Early Scenes
of Maria Stein, Ohio.” In
1962, the Post Office was
moved into a new building
at 8629 St. Rt. 119.
I checked the reference
book, “The Post Offices of
Ohio,” by John Gallagher
and A. Patera, in 1979. They
stated, “The Maria Stein
Post Office was established
August 5, 1850.”
I contacted the U. S.
Post Office at Washington,
D.C., for Maria Stein Post
Office Records. I found
three letters, dated 1865,
1898, and 1939, about
Maria Stein’s Post Office.
February 16, 1865,

wrote the Postmaster
at Maria Stein, Mercer
County, Ohio: “Sir: to
enable the Topographer
of this Department to
determine, with as much
accuracy as possible, the

return the same, verified by
your signature and dated,
