Our View
Race and Harry Reid
A recently published book written by journalists Mark Halperin of Time magazine and
John Heilemann of New York magazine, entitled Game Change has generated a firestorm of
debates this past week. While the behind-the-scenes disclosures in this book involve many
major players in the 2008 Obama-McCain presidential race, it is a segment in the book
describing Sen. Harry Reid’s description of why he believed the country was ready to embrace
a Black presidential candidate that has generated a political war.
Sen. Reid’s description of then-candidate Barack Obama’s “light skin” and his tendency
to not use a “Negro dialect unless he wanted to have one” was offered up to the American
public by the major television news outlets last weekend as if it was the first feeding of
the day in the lion’s den of the local zoo. Like a pride of starving meat eaters, the media
pounced on the Reid statement in the chorus of Sunday morning talk shows. In discussing
the “shock” of Reid’s assertion of color and diction as justification for candidate Obama’s
pending acceptance, the realization that such may not necessarily be as shocking or offensive
to many African Americans did not appear to be important. No small wonder when, as pointed
out by Richard Prince’s “Journal-isms” blog, “there were no journalists of color in any of the
discussions.”
In the course of this real life drama, the view of what White Americans think African
Americans perceive as a racially offensive statement was quickly converted into absurd
political theatre by the Republican Party in their attempt to derail a final vote on meaningful
health care legislation. The star performer in this political theatre was Republican Chairman
Michael Steele, who demanded that Reid step down due his statement being “anachronistic

of the Enclave of Cabinda forces (FLEC) were found near the site of the Jan. 8 shooting
which killed Togo’s assistant coach and team spokesman, as well as the Angolan bus driver.
Eight other people were wounded, including a goalkeeper who was flown to South Africa for
treatment.
“Our boys went to Angola to celebrate the best in African football (soccer) but they came
back with dead bodies and bullet wounds,” said Togbe Aklassou, a traditional ruler from the
Be area of Lome.
AP reported that FLEC leader Rodrigues Mingas—reportedly in exile in France—told
France-Info radio that he’s responsible for the shooting, but claimed his group was targeting
the Angolan troops escorting the Togolese team.
“In war, anything can happen, this is only the beginning,” Mingas said, according to AP.
Andre Puango, coordinator of the Cabinda forum for dialogue (an organization that unites
former FLEC members who began a peace bond with the Angolan government four years ago)
told AP that the attack had came from rebellious FLEC members.
“This attack has been committed by armed gangsters who just want to sabotage the peace
process,” Puango said.

NFL Player Arrested for Choking Wife

Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Jermaine Phillips was recently charged with choking his
wife during an argument.
A Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office press release said Phillips was charged with
domestic battery by strangulation and prison records show the football player was released on
his own recognizance on Jan. 11.
According to The Associated Press, Tampa Bay police say Phillips’ wife dialed 911 on Jan.
10 and claimed Phillips grabbed her around the neck. She also said an argument escalated after
she confronted Phillips about a number in his cell phone.
The Buccaneers released a statement saying they are closely monitoring the situation.
AP reported that a public defender appeared in court for Phillips on Jan. 11, but Phillips is
expected to hire a private attorney for future proceedings.

Donovan McNabb to Return in 2010

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb is one of only four African-American
starting quarterbacks currently in the NFL, and his head coach Andy Reid recently assured the
media that McNabb will remain in the group of few for at least another season.
During a press conference on Jan.11, Reid dismissed any rumors that his 12-year veteran
quarterback wouldn’t be back in Philly in 2010, stating that the five-time Pro Bowler will be
starting for the Eagles next season.
“That’s my call,” Reid told reporters. “I think he’s a great player. His work over the last 11
years has proven that. I truly believe it’s a team sport; it’s not one guy.”
McNabb’s job status came in question following the team’s elimination from the NFL
Playoff as the Eagles fell badly to the Dallas Cowboys in the first round on Jan. 10. McNabb
has been one of the best quarterbacks in the league during his career, but he has also failed to
win a Super Bowl despite being very close in five separate seasons. He finished this season
with 3,553 passing yards, 22 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 14 games. He also recorded a
passer rating of 92.9, the third highest in his career.

Rep. Cummings Speaks on Mark McGwire Debacle

Rep. Elijah E. Cummings spoke Jan. 12 about former baseball slugger Mark McGwire, who
recently admitted using steroids during his career.
McGwire, who was hired as the hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals this season,
recently told reporters he realized he would eventually have to speak about steroid use
and particularly about the testimony he gave to the House Committee on Oversight and
Government Reform.
Congressman Cummings had challenged McGwire on potential steroid use but the former
slugger refused to discuss the allegations.
“I am happy that Mr. McGwire has finally admitted what has been speculated about for
so long,” said Cummings. “His playing career was tainted with the scourge of steroids, as
indicated by the recent Hall of Fame voting, but it was further marred by his refusal to admit
wrongdoing and failure to try to rebuild his credibility. Now, after apologizing and admitting
wrongdoing, he can do exactly that.
“New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez admitted using performance-enhancing
drugs and has shown contrition. Now, he is working to educate future ballplayers about the
dangers of steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs. I would invite Mr. McGwire to WIZARDS
use his new position, and the fame he earned as a player, to help ensure future generations do
not fall into the same trap that he did.”

McGwire received as much criticism from baseball pundits and fans as former MLB star
Barry Bonds, who set the all-time home-run record with 762 in 2007. Unlike McGwire, Bonds
never tested positive for steroid use, but he was he was indicted for perjury and obstruction
