The Polar Bear

The Polar Bear is in a lot of trouble because of global warming. If the temperature of the earth
goes up, the sea ice that the polar bear lives on will melt.

Body length: 2-2.5m

Weight: Male: 300-800kg / Female: 150-300kg

The Polar Bear lives in the North Pole and other ice-covered oceans.

The Polar Bear's favorite dish is seal. The Polar Bear often catches them from the ice. Other than
seal, it also eats walrus, beluga, fish, birds, and many other small animals.

The Polar Bear has a giant body and it is very strong. In the North Pole there are almost no
animals that can win in a fight against the Polar Bear. It is an animal without enemies in the
North Pole.

Global warming is the Polar Bear's enemy.

Do you understand the word "global warming"? Global warming happens when the Earth's
temperature goes up. The Polar Bear is in trouble because of global warming, and as the Earth's
temperature increases, the sea ice in which the Polar Bear lives on will melt.

The ice melts and it can't find any food...

The Polar Bear lives by catching seals and other animals from on top of the sea ice. Now, the
ocean doesn't freeze as much as before so the Polar Bear can't find food and its numbers are
starting to become smaller. Global warming is not easy to stop, but we must cut down on
garbage production and practice energy conservation.

The Asiatic Black Bear

The Asiatic Black Bear lives in many countries in Asia. You can tell them by the crescent moon
pattern on their chests. They are in danger of extinction now because the forests where they live
are being cut down and because they are used in medicine.

Weight: Male 50-120kg/Female 40-70kg

The Asiatic Black Bear lives in many countries across Asia from Iran to Japan.

The Asiatic Black Bear mainly eats nuts and fruit. It sometimes eats animals and insects as well.

Compared to other bears, the Asiatic Black Bear is small and does not often attack other animals.
It is not as scary as you might think at first.

Coming down from the mountains in search of food

The Asiatic Black Bear lives across Asia. You can tell them by the white mark on their chest,
which is shaped like a crescent moon. One of the reasons why the number of Asiatic Black Bears
is decreasing is because forests are being cut down. They mainly eat nuts and fruit, so if the
forests where their food comes from disappear, they will not be able to find food and may die
out. Many Asiatic Black Bears hang around villages when they are hungry and unfortunately
have to be killed. This is pushing them even closer towards extinction.

Many bears are sacrificed for medicine

The gall bladders (one of the internal organs) of Asiatic Black Bears have long been sold as an
expensive medicine. One of the factors driving the bears towards extinction is overhunting for
their use in medicine. The pain that bears feel when medicine is made is also a problem. The
bears are kept in cages where they cannot move, a pipe is put into their gall bladders and a fluid
is removed for use in medicine. The process is very cruel.

The Giant Panda

The Giant Panda is a superstar in the animal kingdom. The forests where pandas live are
becoming smaller and smaller, and they may not be able to find mates or food anymore...

Body length: 120-150cm

Tail length: 13cm
Weight: 80-100kg

They only live in the forests of China.

The Giant Pandas' favorite food is bamboo. Sometimes they also eat small animals and insects,
as well as fruits.

Giant Pandas are part of the bear family. When awake, they are almost always eating bamboo.
They just love to eat!

Find out more about the Giant Panda!

Farms and houses are being built, and the forests are in trouble
In China, the Giant Pandas' home, the number of people is growing. Homes and farms are being
built here and there in the forests, and the places where they live are being split apart. Now they
live in small groups in many small forests, and it's very hard for male pandas to find mates.
They're even having trouble finding their joy---bamboo.

Let's build paths to save the pandas!

There is a plan to help the Giant Panda. By building paths, all of the separate forests that the
pandas live in will be connected. To do this, some farmland will have to be returned to nature.
This means, it will be difficult to save the Giant Panda if people don't stop developing.
