At the SAARC Summit 1989, the Heads of the States and Governments decided to
establisha program for exchangeof scholarsthrough institution of SAARC Scholarships,
crossfertilizationof ideasthroughgreater
andChairsto promoteincreasing
Fellowships
interactionamong academics,scholarsand studentsin the SAARC countries.
In obedienceto this declsion. Senior Officials from the SAARC countries in a meeting
held in February 1987, recommendedthat the Chairs, Fellowships and Scholarships
should be instituted in each member country for organizing teaching, research and
seminars.It was furthelr'recommendedthat each Member would prepare a brochure
accordingto standardforfnat with a view to provide relevant information to the applicants
for facilitating preliminaqyselectionof scholarsat the receiving end.
As the schemedid not *orJ*"ff since its inceptionin 1987,a workshop on operationand
related issues of the scheme held at Katmandu on 22-23 October 2002 for revising
modalities on conceptual framework, organizationalmanagementand coordination and
financing of the scheme.The recommendationswere then again reviewed by the second
meeting of Technical cofnmittee on human ResourcesDevelopmentheld in Colombo on
7-8 November 2002.
It is hoped that the brochure will be helpful to the scholars who intend to avail the
opportunitiesfor researchunder the scheme.For funher improvement and modifications
suggestionsand advice are welcome from all concerned,as the aim of the brochure is to
make if meaninefuland informative.
Objectives

L SAARCChair:
(ii) Eligibility:
Should have outstanding proven scholarship and reputation and should
be a full time professor or equivalent in the university or research
instituteshaving not lessthan fifteen yearsprofessionalexperience.
(iv) Facilities:
(a) Maintenanceallowance shall not be below the scale enjoyed by the
host country at same level. Rather, the allowance shall be (i) 20
percentabovethe scalein host country or (ii) scholar's own institute,
then whichever is higher.
(b) A grant of Taka 5,000.00for books and stationery.
(c) A grant for expensesof internal travel within Bangladeshup to Taka
10,000.00
(d) House rent of Taka 20,000.00per month.
(i) Duration:
The fellowship will be for a period of 6(six) months.
(ii) Eligibility:
A candidate should hold a doctoral degree (or other acceptable
postgraduate qualification). He/she should have standard research
publications to his/her credit and should have evidence of independent
research works and sufficient teaching experience. He/she should have
at least three years experienceas a staff member of a university or
similar institution in his own country.
(iv) Facilities:
(a) Maintenance allowance should be at pat with the salary and
allowances of Reader/AssociateProfessor in the scholar's own
university or host university,whichever is higher.
(b) A grant of Taka 4,000.00for books and stationery.
(c) A grant for internal travel within BangladeshTaka 8,000.00'
(d) Houserent of Taka 15,000.00month.
(i) Duration:
The scholarshipsmay be for the normal tenure of the course for which the
scholarshipis awarded.
(ii) Eligibility:
A scholar preferably with a first class oI high second class
Bachelor'sl\4aster'sdegree,intending to pursue higher studies leading to a
Master's/Ph. D. degree.For member countries,which do not have facilities
at undergraduate level, a candidate with first division in higher secondary
level or equivalentwill be eligible for a courseat undergraduatelevel.
(iv) Facilities :
(a) Maintenanceallowanceof Taka 15,000.00per month.
(b) A grant of Taka 3,000.00for books and stationery.
(c) A grant for internal travel within Bangladeshup to Taka 2,500.00 per
year
(d) House rent Taka 4,000.00per month.
