Indian Railways has a total state monopoly on India's rail
transport. It is one of the largest and busiest rail networks in the world, transporting eighteen million passengers daily and more than two million tonnes of freight daily. The basic aim of railways has been to provide maximum convenience to the passengers.
In every railway station, the station master plays a very
significant role. The station master manages each and every thing concerned with safe and un-delayed passage of trains. The primary objective of the station master is to fulfil the needs of the passengers, and to provide satisfaction to them.
Although the railways are providing a good service to the
passengers, yet there are still some problems that are untouched and unresolved. We have talked to the railway authorities and we have given concern to those problems which are related to train informatics.
Below are the five problems, about which we are discussing,
along with their solutions which we have come up with-:
1. The first problem is related with coach configuration on the
arrival of the train. Often the passengers don’t get to know how the coaches are going to align. This creates a lot of chaos and often platform accidents happen due to this. To resolve this problem, we have decided to establish a central server which will contain the database of coach configuration of every train. Every station will collect information from the database, and each time a change occurs, the database will be updated.
2. Another problem is that the station master has no information
regarding the train’s speed; only the train driver knows the actual speed of the train. The solution to this is to use track circuits with microcontrollers, which will help in finding the speed of train. 3. The problem of Hot Axle (box) due to bearing failure and constant rubbing is a well known problem in railways. It can lead to not only derailments but also collision on double line. For resolving this problem, we are installing an electrical circuit in the axle itself. If there is a hot axle, then the information from this circuit is sent directly to the guard’s cabin and then to adjoining station.
4. Another important problem is the skidding of the wheels, which
sometimes causes a hot wheel. To detect this problem, we are implementing a device which will detect whether the wheel is skidding or not. Its mechanism will be based on principle of zero relative velocity of wheel and track at the point of contact.
All the above proposed solutions are most simple and
efficient solutions possible. No huge installation costs are involved during implementation and are also easy to maintain.
Careful study and extensive research of existing systems has
led us to these problems and solutions, hence if implemented these ideas will definitely make railways a better means to travel with.
