ONLY 0.3% ARE POLITICAL PRISONERS OUT OF 46,000 RELEASED BY

THE NEW REGIME'S AMNESTY

ONLY 2.2% OF POLITICAL PRISONERS ARE RELEASED 1

From among 14600 prisoners being released from various jails throughout Burma as a result of
Amnesty Order issued last Monday evening by President U Thein Sein, altogether 47 political pris-
oners out of over have been released by yesterday evening, according to statistics issued by the
National League for Democracy ( NLD ).

All these 47 political prisoners were from

among those who have been given short
term prison sentences ranging from one year
to five years, spokesman of the NLD said
adding that they all belong to the rank and
file of political organizations chiefly NLD.

“As such these 47 political prisoners, who

have now been set free as a direct effect of
Amnesty Order, happen to be ordinary fol-
lowers of political movements and thus they
are not well-known people,” said the
spokesman.

The same spokesman pointed out that ranking political prisoners most of whom are serving long
prison sentences did not get much benefit from the Amnesty Order, which reduced the prison
terms by one year only.

“To come to the point

majority of over 2000
political prisoners serv-
ing long prison sen-
tences will still remain in
prisons,” the spokesman
said, “thus the benefit of
the Amnesty Order was
enjoyed by common
criminals and not much
by political prisoners.”
