Theme: “Know Yourself”
This is a SAPSF initiated Campaign propagated via the member
branches of the Federation

Vice President 2010/2011
South African Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation

Date of Campaign: 18 – 23 April 2011

SAPSF United Introduction:

T he SAPSF United Project is an initiative which was started by a former Vice President Nadiem
Suffia of the South African Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation. The vision behind this
project was to collectively, without competing, unite all the Pharmacy School Branches in an
initiative on a National level.

The Project is the responsibility of the Vice-President of each year to facilitate and manage the
logistical integration of the SAPSF United Project. The project has a theme as decided upon for the
year, and revolves around serving the community and such involving community stakeholders in
such a health drive.

This year, 2011, is to be known as the year of “Know Yourself”. This theme was selected due to an
increase in incidents whereby patients suffer severe adverse effects of their chronic illnesses due to
mismanagement, as well as the general public being unaware of the “silent and violent killers” such
as, Hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus, Obesity etc as well as not being aware of their risk factors.

The role of each branch is to utilise the campaign kit as set out for the year by the Vice President to
the best extent of which they are able to. It is the responsibility of each branch to ensure the
campaign runs successfully and reflects both the South African Pharmaceutical Students Federation
and their respective branch in a respectable and altruistic light.

It is recommended that each branch form a committee to ensure the campaign runs without any
hindrances. The committee should consist of a Co-ordinator, Media and Communications Officer and
a Treasurer. This committee will be in communication with the Vice-President as to the progress of
their campaign as well as if there are any difficulties or if support is required.

The campaign is to run from 18 – 24 April 2011 and should take place in a mall as this will provide
the greatest exposure to the public. However if any branch would like to they may, as well as the
mall implement the campaign at a clinic site if they so wish.

This initiative was founded on a vision and dream to unite all Pharmacy Students in South Africa
under one umbrella, to celebrate our gifts and skills and to give back to the community. Let us fulfil
that dream.

Yours in Pharmacy

The Project:
Venue:

The branch needs to decide on a venue that best suits the campaign. This venue should
preferably be a Shopping Mall or Shopping Centre due to the number of persons who enter
such premises. If this is not possible a community centre or clinic will suffice as a secondary
solution.

Remember to obtain permission beforehand as well as outlining your goals and objectives
for the campaign. Try to get the Management of the centre involved in the project and
explain the importance of their involvement in such a campaign.

Equipment:

To fully ensure the success of the campaign this section is up to you as well as the
responsibility of the branch to assess whether they will be competent to do such things as
blood pressure monitoring accurately (No students should do this due to risks involved).

General Equipment:

□ SAPSF Care Forms

□ Blood Pressure monitors
□ Tape Measures (waist measurement)
□ Weighing Scales
□ Height Measure
□ Tables (and table cloths if needed)
□ Chairs
□ Pens
□ Patient information leaflets (Enquire at various Pharmacies for these)
o Diets (Cholesterol, Diabetes, Hypertension specific etc)
o Healthy Lifestyles
o Importance of supplementation
o Various Health Conditions (Diabetes, Hypertension, Cholesterol etc)
o ...and any other you wish to have
□ Free give-aways (i.e. apples etc)

Generally make sure that there is enough equipment to facilitate the Campaign as you want
to minimise the patient wait.

Volunteers:

To run the campaign successfully you will need some volunteers to assist in the effective
running of the campaign.

Volunteers include:

□ Pharmacy Students (Not recommended to do testing)

□ Pharmacists (Academic Staff or any other Pharmacists in your region)
□ Pharmacies
o Partner up with any interested Pharmacies
□ Any other persons you deem fit

The Event:

The general event framework is to assess the health levels of persons and to do a health
interview with them (SAPSF Care Forms). This allows one to see where there are differences
in the Patient’s understanding of any conditions they might have, the treatment of it and
how to effectively manage themselves. It also allows you to identify possible risk factors a
Patient may have i.e. Raised Blood Pressure.

In terms of simple examinations one can perform these include Blood Pressure Monitoring
(persons doing this must be competent and trained adequately) and BMI Measurements
(Height and Weight Measurements). Reasons for not including any invasive tests are for the
reason of any incidents which may occur and risks towards those involved in the project and
to the patient.

Other things to be included at the event is counselling on expired medication and how to
discard of them appropriately. You may include a medicine drop off bin during the
Campaign and invite patients to drop any expired medication off in these bins for discarding.
You may want to take this into the community as well and go door to door during the
Campaign period.

As a branch carrying out the project feel free to make the Campaign your own. Ideas include
the SANBS for blood typing in your area, eye testing, eating competitions or even invite
CANSA to do a shave-a-thon and hairspray event etc. The event is yours and up to you to co-
ordinate and make a success of it.

Please note when to refer patients and do so under the supervision of a Pharmacist, also
take note in terms of Pharmacovigilance in reporting any adverse effects.

Public Relations:

To ensure persons know about the Campaign and that there is a success to the event,
approach various angles to get the Campaign out there.

These Include:

□ Social Media Sites (Facebook, Twitter etc)

□ Local Newspapers
□ Radio Interviews
□ SMS and E-mail Campaigns
□ Flyer Drops (Robots, Houses etc)

Post-Campaign:

Make sure to take lots of pictures of the event to document what happened so that we can
join in the fun that you had orchestrating this campaign. Also complete the attached SAPSF
Activity Report and send it in to the SAPSF General Secretary.

Also don’t forget to thank all those involved in your campaign and include letters of thanks
for those who assisted you, including organisations and volunteers. A thank-you can go a
long way.
