Back in the Big (Travel) League
After a weekend of pretty much expected results in Big Cup
we’re back into a round of Big Travel League.

When we last left you, dear reader, the table looked like this:

This week’s fixtures look like this:

Round 8
SATURDAY 21 MAY
Petone vs Maycenvale
Tawa vs Western Suburbs
(Petone Memorial, 2.30pm)
(Redwood Park, 2.30pm)

just one point behind Petone, and Tawa upset Wairarapa to push
themselves three points clear of Petone into 6th.

Petone host Maycenvale in a game which, at the end of the year, could
look like a significant turning point for one of them.

The two teams have similar records, with just one draw the difference.
Both teams have scored 12 goals, but Maycenvale have shipped
a whopping 22. At home, Petone coach Mark Foster will fancy his
chances in this one, but can his team keep hold of a lead, or will
Golden Boot race leader Joachim Rande put Maycenvale two points
clear of Petone.

Mathematically, Petone could drop all the way to 10th with a loss to
Maycenvale, but the chances of Napier turning over Lower Hutt and
Marist beating Olympic are slim, to none.

Olympic will be without red-card regular Barry Lewis after he took

one for the team in the Cup against United at the weekend. They’ll be
used to that though.

At the other end of the table, Miramar (1st) travel over the hill to play
The Rapper (2nd). Miramar are yet to lose this year, but a trip to The
Rapper is never easy. Wairarapa have not lost at home this year, with
their only dropped points coming away at Tawa and Palmerston North
(two places with a lot in common). The key for Miramar will be striker
Dominic Rowe. Rowe has scored in three of Miramar’s four wins this
season, and when he fires, the Mar win.

The Rapper’s class is all wrapped around Adam Cowan. On his day
Cowan is one of the best in the league. He can play all over the park,
and pops up and score goals for fun. Cowan has, this year, taken on an
assistant coaching job alongside part-time money man Phil Keinzley.
If Cowan has a good day, and feeds joint Golden Boot leader Campbell
Banks, Wairarapa are a big danger.

The winner, if there is one, will go three points clear at the top, while a
draw will edge both teams further clear of third placed Wests.

with Adelaide in 2005-6 and has been a

In his first interview on the move he said he could not only fill the boots

Nasty.

Reaction from Adelaide fans has been telling. While they wish
Pantyless all the best, they seem to think he’s past his best and
lost his pace when he had a knee reconstruction. They aren’t
gutted.

Will this be another Ricki Herbert career-rescue like the one he

pulled with Eugene Dadi? Or have we just signed another team’s
castoff?
