The Confessions of an Advertising Man" by David Ogilvy is the book

that triggered my interest in Advertising. Retrospectively, it was the
book that developed my vague interest into a strong desire to be a
creative; its intrigue making me even more determined to pursue
my dream with lifelong dedication. Throughout my academic life I
have analysed many adverts in English Language and Media
Studies, these exercises convinced me that advertising is the
perfect career for me.

Whether it is a billboard or a TV advert, I'm fascinated by the

process of its creation. The advert is passed through many hands;
absorbing the numerous ideas of the clients, designers and then
passed on to the consumers; its influence resonating within society.
My ardour for advertising is created through its originality and
creativity, advertising being a collection of ideas that come to life.

Studying English Language requires me to analyse all forms of

written and spoken language; it enables me to use correct grammar
and understand how language can be used for different effects for
example to persuade target audiences in adverts. Studying A-level
Media Studies requires me to have research skills, production skills
and to be proficient with both the Adobe Premiere Pro software and
Final Cut Pro software; these software's are vital in ensuring that I
have knowledge of the creation of adverts. Whilst A-level Textiles
ensures that I use my creativity to the best of my ability. It gives me
reflective, analytical and evaluative skills through looking at the
work of other artists and using their influence to produce my own
ideas. Also Textiles has permitted me to comprehend the true depth
of artistic integrity alongside ensuring I have good knowledge of
working on Mac computers and using Photoshop. It is these valuable
skills which I think will be suitable for an art undergraduate.

Alongside my A-levels, I took a regular creative writing class for a

year. This deepened my love for creative writing and inspired me to
enter the MMU All Write 2009 competition. Getting my creative
writing published in the MMU All Write anthology was gratifying and
I hope to enter many more competitions especially D&AD, YCN and
other prestigious competitions related to advertising.

During my time at high school, I was a school ambassador at the

year 7 and 8's parents evening; I had to guide potential students
and their parents. This showed that I had good interpersonal skills,
intelligence, initiative and generosity in giving time. I hope that I
can contribute to university life by volunteering as a student
representative and helping potential students in a similar manner.

I was also a regular member of the high school's rounder team. In

our annual competition, we reached the final; this shows my
devotion and dedication to my team. Through my regular
commitment, I gained priceless skills of time-keeping and
responsibility. In university I would relish the opportunity to
contribute to university through any sports and activities.

I pleasantly anticipate having to work hard on a deadline and to

work together with other members of my team. My passion for
creative ideas and my obstinacy for working through a problem will
stimulate and motivate me to ensure that I have the right
necessities to complete an Advertising degree and gain a role in an
Advertising agency. My continual journey to gain artistic and
creative skills is not at the end but at the beginning. The strength of
my commitment and enthusiasm has increased vastly through
college; I would love for it to continue through my time at university.
I'm very excited at the prospect of meeting new people and
developing as a person. I am in no doubt that Advertising is the
career in which my talents and future rests.
