 Introduction
 In metering liquids,gases,or
stem and in process control in
various industries ,the quantity of
fluid passing through the cross-
section of a pipeline per unit time
or over a certain time interval is
often the requirement.
Classification of flow
mesuring devices
 Pressure differential created
by placing restriction in flow line
i.e. differential head meters.
 Local or point velocity and
pressure mesurement method-
i.e.Pitot-tube velocity & flow
meters.
 Constsnt differential head flow
meters or variable area fiow meters.
 Volume flow meters,magnetic
flow meters.
We will therefore,classify
them as::-

(1) Head Type

(2) Area Type
(3) Mass flowmeter type
(4) Positive Displacement type
(5) Electric type
(6) Digital type
(7) Open channel type
(8) Solid flow meter
Rotating Impeller
Meter:
 An
impeller is
housed in
the casting
of the meter.

 The fluid enters the meter and

flow through.
 The impeller is rotating
because of fluid perssure on vanes.
 The impeller flotes on water
and the fluid leaves through outlet.
 Its accuracy is +1 or -1.
Rotating Lobes
Meter
It consists
of lobe type
rotor
mounted on
two parallel
shafts.
 The fluid enters through inlet
and fills the space between two rotor;
and because of its pressure makes
the rotors move in opposite direction.
The fluid is pushed towards outlet.
 Its accuracy varies from 0.1%
to 0.5%.
Nutating Disc Meter
 It consists
of an
eccentricall
y mounted
disc which
natutes in a
hemispheric
al chamber.
The nutating motion is a working
motion of the disc to provide a
sweeping motion in addition to
rotating.
It has wide range and it also easy
to use, however it can only be used for
clean sufficient density liquid.
Reciprocating
piston meter:
 This is also a
positive-
displacement type
meter
like,rotating vanes
and nutating disc
meters.
 It has cylinder,piston and
sliding valve arragement.
 The liquid enters both side
of piston in turn through inlet
valve.
 High accuracy +0.2 to +0.3
or -0.2 to -0.3.
Pitot tube
 It is used
to measure
flow rate of
liquid,gas and
air. When
fluidenter the
pitot tube with
velocity ‘v’ its
kinetic energy
is converted
Into potential
energy.

 V.V=2gH….(a)
 Q=A*V….(b)
 Where,A=cross-section area of the
pipelines
Venturi meter
 A U-tube manometer is used
to measure pressure head
difference ,’h’ between inlet and
throat as shown.
oOrifice Meter
 An orifice plate has a sharped edged concentric
circular hole.Normally it is made from stainless steel
from 3mm to 12.5mm thick. Orifice plate has many
varieties.
Advantages:
(1) Chear in cost.
(2) Occupies less space.
Disadvantages:
(1) High pressure drop.
(2) Slurry or solid particles damage the hole.
Advantages:

(1) Less pressure drop

(2) Usedfor large flow rate
(3) The divergent part helps to
lower the permanent pressure loss.

Disadvantages:
(1) Occupies more space
(2) Not suitable for pipe
diameter less then 76.2mm.
(3) Costly.
Flow Nozzle
 The fiow nozzle is fabricated from stainless
steel, gun metal etc.It is fitted either in pipe or
in tank.
Advantages:
(1) Suffer less pressure drop compared to
orifice meter
(2) Occupies less space.
Disadvantages:
(1) Costly compared to orifice
(2) Suiteble upon medium sized pipes.
Rota meter
 It is a device used to measure fiow rate
of a fluid. It consists of a vertical tapered
tube with a flote which is free to move within
the tube. The fluid enters the devie from
bottom and flows upward. When there is no
flow the float rest at the bottom.
Advantages:
(1)Float position
can be seen.
(2)Good accuracy
for low flow rate.
(3)Remote
indication possible.
Disadvantag-
es:
(1)Glass tube is
fragile.
(2)Float cannot be
seen if the fluid is
dense.
Electromagnetic
Meter
 It works an
Faraday’s
electromagnetic
induction principal. A
magnetic field is
produced within the
pipe,in which fluid flow
is to be mesured,by the
magnets place outside
the pipe..
Advantages:
1)No obstruction,no
(

pressure drop.
(2)No moving parts,no maintenance.
(3)Can function even if the flow is reversed.

 Disadvantages:
(1)Fluid must be electrical conductor.
(2)Air trap must be avoided.
(3)Costly.
Ultrasonic Meter
 Here altrasonic
transdusars are used
either parallel to pipe
wall or placed at
some angle.When
ultrasonic waves are
passed through the
fluid,the velocity of
waves increases
or decreases depending upon the
direction of fluid flow.Piezo-electric
transducers A and B generate
ultrasonic waves and transmits them
through the fluid. The fluid velocity is say
V.
