Equating S-Parameters with
Common Measurement Terms
S-parameters are essentially the same
parameters as some of the terms
we have mentioned before, such as
input match and insertion loss. It is
important to separate the fundamental
definition of S-parameters and
the format in which they are often
displayed. S-parameters are inherently
complex, linear quantities. They are
expressed as real-and-imaginary or
magnitude-and-phase pairs. However,
it isn’t always very useful to view
them as linear pairs. Often we want
to look only at the magnitude of the
S-parameter (for example, when
looking at insertion loss or input
match), and often, a logarithmic display
is most useful. A log-magnitude format
lets us see far more dynamic range
than a linear format.
