Pocahontas was the daughter of Powhatan. Powhatan was an
important chief of the Algonquian Indians. The Algonquian tribe lived in Virginia. In 1606, when Pocahontas was a girl, the Algonquian captured Captain John Smith. John Smith was an English colonist. The Indians wanted to kill Smith but Pocahontas stopped them and her father allowed John Smith to return to his people. Pocahontas wanted peace between the Indians and the colonists. She married John Rolfe and traveled to England with him. But Pocahontas’ dream of peace ended when she died at the age of 22.
